I have spent every night for the last week attacking my 10 year old Lofrans Royal Manual Windlass and I just can't get the final gearwheel and the bit the handle fits into away from the main body.

I've tried everything, soaking in WD40, soaking in scalding hot water (hoping that the metal would expand), soaking overnight in bleach (to try and remove the salt)and even hitting with a 10lb sledgehammer!! I'm literally about to give up.

Before I go and buy a new one, I thought I might see if there are any marine companies out there that might have some specialist pullers etc. to do the job. Does anyone know of a someone who could tackle this?

Thanks
RB

A bit of heat might do a job.

< use a bigger hammer> and risk busting it altogether!

Scalding water is nowhere near hot enough. Get the local garage or welder to heat it up with an oxy-acetylene torch - they will be well used to this sort of problem. The metal has sometimes to be near red hot before a frozen bearing will expand enough to part.

About 4 years ago I had the problem of a completely seized SL Windlass. Someone on this forum suggested leaving it in a bucket of diesel for about 6 weeks. Did so and it came apart with great ease! might work for you.
