Windlass problem

It is marked S-L Hyspeed. Not sure what model this is, can anyone identify.

It was on the boat when I got it. It is pretty seized up, when i unwind the wheel to release the chain it does nothing, just seized up I assume.

More serious is when i use the handle, as i move it aft the drums rotate, but when i release the pressure it doesn't latch in place, just unwinds the chain as the handle comes forward. Then randomly it the handle slips and does nothing. Jiggling the drum seems to re-engage the handle.i

I unscrewed the oil point bolt and it is full of oil, there is what looks like a grease nipple on the end of ghe a le, but it is all rusted up


Is it worth fixing? Are parts available

If the unwind is seized and releasing the chain doesn't work my bet is you will have to replace it. The question is have the bolts that hold the winch on also seized. We had that and to get the winch off they had to cut a hole in the deck. When they tried to get the winch apart they used a 20 ton press and it wouldn't come apart. The hole in the deck was rebuilt (steel boat) and a new winch fitted. Moral of the story service the winch every year and spray the holding bolts with WD40 regularly.
 
Those links are great. Expensive bit of kit to replace, i would go electric rather than replace it.

If the handle turns the drum the i am assuming the chain is connected, so what could cause it not to hold the drum when i release the handle. I think i might have a go at dismantalling it
 
It could be the cone clutch its fairly easy to see what's going on once you have it open.
But opening it could be the hard part so if its at all difficult soak it in a bucket of diesel !!!

Mine is now working perfectly!!!

In fact yours should be better in side as it runs in an oil bath whereas mine is just packed with grease

The mechanicals inside are simple bike chains and bike ratchet sprockets, I rebuilt one once with bits from my local bike shop.
 
Only the aft movement of the handle works, not working as a double action so iam guessing the chain or the frewheel sprocket is knackered. As previously noted getting it apart will be the hardest bit
 
Some succes. Am on the boat overnight, but my tools are at home :-(
I managed to loosen the clutch nut and free the gypsy from the clutch. The clutch and inside of the gypsy are pretty rusty. Plusgas and the parts diagram helped. So now I can lower the anchor.

Problem now is how to get the clutch nut off the mainshaft as the whole lot including the drum on the other side are spinning freely. Maybe I need some tools to jam in between the drum and the housing to hold it still, or maybe the plusgas will loosen the clutch nut more overnight.

Been there! But can't remember how I did it, might have wrapped a line around the capstan and tied it off somewhere.

One thing which will help massively is a punch the right size to knock the pin out which attaches the clutch cone to the shaft.

I just noticed the split pin. A suitably sized drill bit and hammer will probably work. I think more tools are required. I will try to get the gypsy and clutch cleaned up tomorrow, further stuff will have to wait until saturday when i am back with the tool bag.
