probably very stupid question which shows I know nothing...about electric windlass's. do they have a switch or other safety device to stop you burning out the motor if you accidently keep the power on when the chain is right in?

There is a Circuit Breaker which trips on overload. It will not reset for a few minutes. However not a good idea to make a habit over overwinding, windlasses are naturally very powerful devices.

Besides the circuit breaker, there is a Wi-Fi control WITH chain counter: it gives you also the speed at which the winlass is working (a proxy for the effort it is undergoing), plus the lenght of rode paied out. After one season I can't think of doing without.

Good installations have a thermal overload switch in addition to the main curcuit breaker.
