Windlass Install

Advice needed.

I bought a Quick Aries windlass to install(good price) but Im not sure if I have the necessary time over the winter in which to install it.

I have a sealine s240 & although the cable runs & wiring are accessable, it might take sometime to do a proper job of it.

Any advice regards mounting the hardware, I dont know if the provided location is cored etc but is it a job that's best left to proffesionals ?

Can anyone recommend an installer (Torbay), or should I leave it, sell it on & buy my next boat with one installed.

I just installed a new Lofrans Tigress on my boat in June this year.

I am very handy and very much hands on sort of person, so I thought, no problem I will fit it myself! and I did, however I have to say the job is not for the faint hearted!

The cable run is long and very heavy as 50.sq.mm. cable must be used. All the cables should be correctly cut and crimped with the proper tool or power will be lost. Many other cable connections and holes to drill! so if you are not confident, don't do the job yourself. I think you may have to pay perhaps as much as a £1000. to have it fitted properly.

I am pretty confident that the install would be within my scope.
Wiring would be straightforward, but i'm not sure about cutting holes through the deck.

Is the procedure for making good the holes time consuming?
I will need to travel 190 miles to do it & it would need to be done over a weekend.

I don't want to rush the job or cause any future leakage problems so is a weekend long enough to alow a hardware install?

Sounds like you are talking yourself out of the idea. I reckon I'm pretty handy, but my general experience has been that the "half hour job" is generally at least half a day, maybe more. If you have no experience in cutting into cored decks or installing electrics, leave it to the experts. It will cost you more if you cock it up and have to call them in anyway. Steer clear of the big firms if you can, talk to fellow owners in the area who may be able to recommend a good and fair operator. This forum may turn up some recommendations. It took me about three years to assemble my "team" of specialists and only after some bad and expensive experiences with the "named" and "manufacturer approved" set ups.
