Hello,

I'm looking (at rather short notice) to hire a yacht for a weekend on Windermere. A rather unhelpful lady at one of the charterers there said that no one hired yachts anymore on Windermere! Is this true!!! Can anyone charter a boat to me for a weekend or recommend someone to me!??

Many Thanks,
Ian Brown

Years ago I hired from Holidays Afloat, had a Broom 30 stinky. I know then they hired one of the Frenchy tupperware raggy jobs and had quite a fleet, from memory they were Jeanau but not sure. Broom was in a disgusting state and when we complained was fed a load of bull. I think they thought I knew nthing, big mistake!
We met up with one of the couples on a yacht and they were none too impressed either. Their boat was I think only a couple of years old.

The split charge system was completely dead and the batteries were knackered as well.

My wife and myself also hired from Holidays afloat, two winters ago at the end of November for four days with a Jeaneau 31. Everything worked but the sails were shot. Couldn't complain however as the yacht we paid for (26ft) had keel problems and the cost was very low. It rained so much that all the jetties On Windermere were about 12" under water. Another day it was so windy that the chain ferry was cancelled, we still went out sailing and enjoyed the few days.

Saw them advertising last winter but don't know about this year.

try shepherds 015394 44031 they have a nice 21ft day boat which I have used last year and sleep ashore which might be better at this time of year
you can hire it by 1/2 day ,day ,or week
the yard next door had a similar sized boat with a cuddy but it sailed sideways

As the others said there is Holidays Afloat, I think their office is by Nab Ferry. In there last brochure they had at least 5 or 6 yachts. We haven't used them as the condition of their day boats was poor (dirty, poor sails and rigging). The one we used didn't quite sail sideways but if you used the outboard you went around in circles .... think we gave quite a few people a laugh as we tried to get back. We asked for a briefing before we set off - and were told about the outboard, that was it, we wanted to check something about the sails/rig we were told they don't brief you on them as "you shouldn't be using them if need to ask about them". The day boats are Capris (I think) and the ones at Shepherds look much better.

The reason you are having problems becomes aparent on page 130 of the March YM. It appears that all the fleet of hire boats are for sale by Robson. Some have already been sold.

Did you find anything?
