Last year we saw Sail Ionian flotilla skippers fitting vertical wind scoops to forecabin hatches. Effective or not? Worth the money? Does anyone have experience / feedback?

Very effective, in fact, almost essential.
Money? SWMBO made ours for about a fiver.

Happy sailing

Which type of windscoop do you mean? The classical, "standard" type like this:

Or the more elaborate type that works whichever direction you're facing, like this one:

We have two of the "standard" types for our moody 422, and wouldn't be without! They draw a very pleasant breeze through the whole boat, which is delicious when it's 40 degrees C outside like it was last month in the Ionian...!

Absolutely brilliant gets a breeze right through the boat, I have three of them forward and they send air right through a 57' boat, wouldnt be without mine.

Fab bits of kit. We use ours as a spinnaker when racing, a hammock at anchor, a water catcher in the tropics, a backpack, a helipad, a DZ marker, an emergency handkerchief for when you have a bad cold, a shopping bag for Lidl, a sleeping bag, a cool box (not very effective) and a scoop for catching wind and directing it through the boat (very effective).

What was the question again?

As I am just about to buy some (or get the SWMBO to make them!) which do you suggest - is the all direction one (second picture) as good, or is it a compromise?

not useful ......... essential.

Our latest one was a giveway from the local chandlers in Gouvia, made of ripstop nylon.

The forepeak would have been unbearable at night ( others had claimed the cockpit seats as bunks ) without te scoop.

The all round one is good if you are in a marina or at anchor not facing the wind (two anchors) but the directional one is best when the boat swings into the wind at anchor, horses for courses I guess. We use the directional ones and AC in the marinas!!

Unless you enjoy trying to sleep in a sauna, a simple wind scoop that fits over the fore hatch is essential when at anchor.

Also essential IMO is a proper canopy that extends forward over the coachroof - with deep sides - to keep the sun off of the deck.

Both are easy to make at home, even if sewing skills are very basic.

I purchased one from the American catalogue of 'West Marine' .It required no ties to mast or forestay, instead was self supporting, using flexible fibreglass rods sewed into the side hems,. It also kept all but driving rain out-useful when the boat is unattended...

I use the standard one and cannot imagine how the more complex one can even be as good, let alone better. Remember it will pull air through the boat if downwinf, as well as push it, and the larger the unobstructed area of hatch for the air to pass through the better. The complex type would seem to only use at best about half the available hatch area, which must severely cut the volume of airflow.

Mine works well whatever the wind direction.

Keep it simple!

Interesting...
Has it got a name? the US West marine website is vast, and I'm not sure in which category to search, no doubt the Yanks call them by some weird name...!

Didn't think SailIonian did flot's, well maybe informal ones ?
Be there with them for the second time in about 10 days.

Second the comments on the windscoop, unbearable without one. But, I can never fathom out how best to fasten it to the hatch !
