Been keeping my eye on the weather forecast for the wind at Cowes, met office site still saying 20mph westerly calming to 15 later, anyone had a look out on the water to see how it looks. Normaly I would not worry but I have a boat full of people wanting to tag along!

I am not coming from far away so the trip is not the problem, more the rolling about for a couple of hours and the thought of people throwing up all over my new upholstery!!

I was going to take the kids, but have now cancelled as don't fancy the run back to Lymington in the dark with kids on board with this forecast, though would have gone if solo.

Don't need tickets, it's free and the free guides in the shops tell you best places to view. Get there early, it will be packed as usual

There's always this <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.iwight.com/news_events/event_search3_c.asp?Ev_ref=1159>http://www.iwight.com/news_events/event_search3_c.asp?Ev_ref=1159</A> if it's not booked out

Lets see if we can convince whoever has the biggest boats that we will all crew for them and give generously to their favourite charities.. I am desperate to go as I have missed the last 2 years!

on the link, if you go to the top of the page and click on wind, you'll get a graph of the wind. It's been building steadily all day

I cancelled cause of the forecast. Normally go but I go to enjoy it not to be thrown all over the place while sitting at anchor!

No, you are wrong.

Last year it was absolutely flat calm for the fireworks - there were hundreds of boats anochored.

The fun bit was keeping out of trouble on the way home.......some at 30kn with anchor lights on, some with lights, some without. You can just imagine.

it was not flat calm, not just off the beach at gurnard, it was quite choppy, mostly caused by other boats, the year before was damp and horrid too,

Well you were clearly in the wrong spot....

We were just N of East Cowes in 3m or so. No wind at all and no swell - just that from the passing boats (mainly smallish).

Super evening- I thought at the time that this cannot be repeated.

Re: Can always drive to the beach

I'm told Calshot is a good place to watch, and whilst perhaps it lacks the romance of being aboard, personally I wouldn't take my boat for a gold clock. I went once and spent the evening juggling with boats whose anchors hadn't held and etc. Good for my guests but a nightmare for me.

Last time I was there I was berthed up the river and took an inflatable to the little town quay thingy and walked down to the shore, got back into the boat just in time to beat the flotilla heading up the river.

With the wind as shown the area west of the bramble bank may have some steep and unpleasent seas, depending on the tide.

you were right, it was fine!! I kept en eye on the website Brendan kindly tole me about and about 6ish the wind died to a nice level so we all went out, still expecting a bit of rough but nope it was realy quite calm. I expected it to be quieter than last year due to the weather earlier in the day etc and I was right it was!

Last year was a little hairy at times with boats lined up feet apart but this year I just drifted about where I wanted most of the time. There were plenty of shore side spectators as ever and the fire works were great, i did miss the excitment of everyone sounding horns etc but hey.

There was only one scarey moment and that was when a very large racing raggie tried to reverse into me 3 times in 5 mins wehn i had been static holding against the tide to 15 mins! Even the tourist boats played nice this year and the trip back up to the itchen was quite restful!

Glad you enjoyed it. I normally anchor just inside the breakwater on the eastern side of the entrance. Only really viable for a cat or bilge keeler, and tides this year were not good for this spot. It is out of the way of all the traffic, and most of the idiots on high powered ribs transferring people out to the bigger yachts keep reasonably clear. ah well theres always next year.
