Wind cups not spinning on raymarine

Do Raymarine wind cups stop spinning at masthead for any good reason ? Apart from sending a small teenager up mast with a can of silicon spray are these more items that fail after 5 years and need regular regular replacement or is it just a failure to service somehow ? In absence of a suitable teenager etc any solutions known to prevent future occurrence if the unit needs replacing due to failed bearings- are there replaceable parts maybe ?

Unless something is physically jamming the rotor externally, it will be failed bearings although 5 years is not the norm.

Mine has stopped spinning on three occasions during the last 14 years. On each occasion it has clogged up with red rain. (Boat in Sardinia and Greece).
Easy to unclog particularly if removed from mast head, twists off from fitting. Cleaned with hot water and WD 40 without taking it apart. If you are based in the UK red rain (Saharan dust) is unlikely to be the problem.

Bearings go, easy enough to do, get up there, remove unit, bring it down and service....I can send you link to the bearings you need, they are like £3

I've just had my mast down and can confirm that it's really easy to remove the transducer from the masthead - it's a simple plug and socket, with an outer screw sleeve to secure it.

The bearings will depend upon which version of the MHU we're talking about although I assume that it's the latest version. See my thread link above for the full details.

Saharan dust is not unknown in these islands. We had some in the Dublin region last summer, and occasionally in previous years.
When the Azores High is in the right position it can funnel warm dusty air towards us from West Africa.

It's quite normal for cars to have a coating of brownish dust after light rain in East Anglia.

Same here but done with mast up. As it goes I had my son go up and send it down. I gave it a quick (it was quick for me but I doubt he felt that way…) clean up and sent it up again for him to refit. Worked perfectly since.

Currently we are enjoying the fleshpots of Brixham but when we are back from Costa Torquay to Gosports all offers of a willing lad would be welcome and rewarded suitably for his time. While it’s hot down here I doubt pollen is much seen in Gosport.
