Winches and things

Is there anything between Harken, Lewmar e.t.c? The boats I am looking at all seem to have different winches, one had Anderson winches which did look lovely!
Are some easier to service, do they last longer e.t.c?

some are definitely stronger than others (ask parahandy) AFAIK, Lewmar and the much cheaper Australian Arco winches are both well built and strong dont know the others.

Lewmar the best UK winch and a market leader for many years but maybe not the case now. Harken the best from USA but now being built to a price.Anderson tip top...fitted by Najaad....need I say more!!!
Good to see you have seen the sense and thinking of sail....bit like going from your 747 to a DC3....think of the money saving when fuel goes through the roof.

Ha Ha, think of the extra ££££ berthing!!! It would only be an extra £2000 a year if fuel became expensive, that is not a lot in the scheme of things!

You have a point Moose. Mine is an Horizon but all the instructions and electrics are printed Lewmar. Haven't fitted it yet but my mate has and works fine.????

Try to avoid Girdlestones - they're all plastic and although they're better than you might expect they're not as strong as metal ones.

I haven't compared them all but when you compare the standard of design and engineering in a Lewmar with others the answer is plain. Many makers still seem to make winches that can't be fully serviced without taking the things off the deck. How can that be good design? At least with a Lewmar you get an idea of where some of the money went. I just wish I could afford to put them on my boat at the moment.
PS Lewmar...is this a good enough ad? just post them to my home address.
