Winch Handle Question

I have a set of old Barton winches on board which are still working fine. Two halyard winches (602s') and two bigger sheet winches.

The handles locate into the bottom of the winch and they are basically a flat metal length with a u shape cut into the end that locates into the winch mechanism.

One of the handles for the bigger winch has broken and having tried unsuccessfully to get a replacement from most of the usual suppliers, I contacted Barton directly to be told that they stopped manufacture several years ago and no longer keep parts (handles)

Before I throw in the towel and invest in a new set of winches, does anyone have any ideas??

Fairly easy task for a fabricator to notch out a piece of stainless flat bar to match your existing one. Certainly cheaper than a new set of winches.

I'm pretty sure that that is the Barton 602 winch handle at 9 inches long it is approx 2 inches shorter and a half inch narrower than the larger sheet winch handle.

I recently got hold of a 602 handle from Mailspeed but cant get the bigger one for love nor money (and I'm prepared to offer both!)

I think Wendel might have the right idea and a trip to the local Blacksmith is called for.

I will keep a look out at the next boat jumble, and acquire one speculatively, just to corner the market.

Judging by some of the stuff that some folk try to flog at' boat jumbles' I would think that you have a fairly good chance of coming across one of these at such an event- mind you by the time you've travelled to two or three the incidental costs will have pushed the total cost up a bit

Ah, but the total cost is incidental if you can't sail yer boat coz you avent got a winch handle.

Besides I go to jumbles for the peace and relaxation, I am fully kitted (mostly).

I have spoken to a local blacksmith who reckons it will be a "piece of cake" to make one up for me at not too much cost - will post result on here if / when job done.

If however you do come by one at a boat jumbly would be interested to hear from you.
