there is only half the gear oil in the box that there should be and the dipstick was in the bilge so I am hoping that the twist bayonet fitting had untwisted itself and it had popped out

simple thing but it is a check thjat I should do daily - which means lifting up the floor each day and removing the steps

outboards are easier things to manage

The primary thing that is easier to manage about outboards is that they are easier to replace. In my experience, outboards aren't any more reliable than diesels.
