The intrepid Mr Winters has always maintained that a centaur is not for life, just to get round the jagged bits of Scotland but does seem to have fallen in love with her.

So

After finishing the Scottish leg, will Dylan keep Harmony?

Winter NOT Winters

It's a little known fact that Dylan's surname was originally Winters, and that for many years he toured the music halls - "A Smile, A Song, an Upturned Flowerpot" - with his older brothers Mike and Bernie. The dog he sails with is a descendent of Schnorbitz.

I don't think that he will keep Harmony for long but only because I believe that she will be purchased by public subscription for the new National Keep Turning Left memorial Museum. He will then use the proceeds to buy a large new Southerly to park on various sandbanks.

I've a good mind to report this thread to the Mods. Surely you are aware that polls like this cannot be published until Dylan has stopped turning left and arrived home. Sheeeeeesh! :D

I was musing that Dylan's trip could continue in various differnt ways in a number (possibly infinite) of different universes.

In one of these, having now acknowledged the existence of the canals, he finds himself obliged to Keep Turning Left into the western end of the Caledonian in Harmony, and finds himself doing laps round northern Scotland for the rest of his days.

In another, having got the taste for a larger boat with a properly functioning inboard, he finds something yet larger and more to his newly acquired taste as he makes his way down the west coast - around, say, Preston. ;) However, by the time he gets to the south coast he has tired of the cost and complication, and the lack of excuses to decline passegers/crew, and decides what he really needs is a nice small (19ft-ish?) yet roomy for its length, shoal draft motor-sailer like, for instance, a Mirror Offshore, and completes his circumnavigation in Son-of-Slug. (Or should that be Daughter-of-Slug?)

If he gets to Preston he could swap Harmony for a nice classic fishing vessel. Obviously he will need to approach CranesRUs.com for sponsorship but if Dylan could do something "zany" and cool and maybe get some dreads then the world could be the mollusc of his choice.

not keen on canals

but the slug idea is a good one

but with a bilge full of oil.....a love affair with an inboard is still some way off

Do I gather correctly that it's gearbox oil coming out of the gearbox dipstick hole, not engine oil coming out of the engine dipstick hole? If so, I wouldn't be too bothered, but I'd check regularly to make sure the dipstick hasn't worn in a way which allows it to unlock itself.

If it's engine oil, run the engine with the filler cap off and see if anything is blowing out there. If just a little is, check the crankcase breather. If there's a lot, stick Harmony on ebay.

The Caledonian is something hugely different to the average canal (much of it beautiful lochs and canalised rivers, surrounded by mountains). I'm sure you'd enjoy it if you found yourself passing that way at any time.

Each to his own, but as you're making your way round the north of Scotland note how often you see a handy petrol pump!

Suddenly it's all very clear to me! - You buy back the original Slug, get sponsorship from Beta to install a nice shiny new (and red!) ultra-reliable Beta 10. . . . ;)

a bilge full of oil

I hope you've got that sorted when you read this ...

But when I found I had a bilge full of gearbox oil, it turned out that an oil seal at the propeller shaft end of the gearbox had become dislodged. Fortunately I managed to push it back into the housing, which stopped the leak.

It was just a thought ... different engine anyway (a Bukh).

Hope it's something very simple anyway.

there is only half the gear oil in the box that there should be and the dipstick was in the bilge so I am hoping that the twist bayonet fitting had untwisted itself and it had popped out

simple thing but it is a check thjat I should do daily - which means lifting up the floor each day and removing the steps

outboards are easier things to manage
