Hi i seem to have problems getting a good signel on my laptop in marinas,can any one give me ideas on how to improve the signal, may be fitting a external arial it this is poss.

Have you tried a wireless 3G broadband dongle?

Are you rx the marina mast or have a dongle?

If using the Marina signal (or others like the BTfon network), Repeatit gives me good results; others say a Hawking dish (from Maplins?) is good.

I use a wifi amplifier (bullet 2hp), which gives miles of range (literally). Alternatively you could try an alfa amplifier (easier to use & cheaper).

I too use a dongle (vodafone) which I find works well nearly everywhere incl strangely enough Newtown Creek where I get 3G and fast speeds. There is one place in Swanwick I only get 2 G and it 'hunts' about because i think the pontoon falls between two signal masts.

I have never had an issue either with Blackberry signals (O2) and can use the web and e mails with as fast times as here in London.

Frankly I would not be in a position to spend as much time as I do away from the office or indeed home without it.

Also its neat to be able to get Wx etc from different places and even use iplayer to catch up on some TV.

Its up to the user isn't it? You do not need to have laptop, TV or mobile on your boat if you choose not too. Ditto lighting , heat and HW..

I couldn’t agree more - it gives the ability to go down to the boat far more often than if the technology wasn’t available as I would be tied to the office (which is a horrible thought)

Of course there are downsides to always being available - personally however I think that the benefits outweigh the downsides!

It wasn't a criticism of any one who takes the laptop with them, i usually find myself doing the same. My excuse is that i can use it to keep an eye on the weather lol

What is the Bullet, how do you connect it up, what does it do, how well does it work, are there any downsides?

I too could not go to the boat without the internet as I usually work in the morning and try to keep the afternoon free, Trouble is I have moved erths and now my signal keeps dropping out, so I am very interested in how to increase reception strengh

I use a Repeatit with some success. Being a motor boat we can't get the height for huge distances but it extends our range by 100 yds or so which brings a friendly free internet cafe into view.
