I've just spent 4 days in Yarmouth, people watching.

Why is it that so many men fail to take due note of wind and tide, subsequently completely screw up their approach, and then proceed to scream blue murder at the hapless lady on the bows who is doing her best to recover the situation??

Further, why do the women take it? Mrs Nicho certainly would not let me get away with it. One husband and wife crew were helped by myself, after the silly old duffer completely misjudged his docking manoeuvre whilst approaching downwind AND downtide. He completely lost control of the boat, and started to scream abuse at his long suffering wife. I took the line from her and asked why she put up with it. "I'm used to it after 45 years" she sighed........

Well girls, why do you put up with it? You must to stand your ground more, and tell them where to get off!!

Not half as dangerous as sitting there, with these idiots coming straight at you, out of control, and just waiting for the bang!! It's also interesting that most of them are gentlemen of (by the look of them and their boats), many years of sailing.

I do not like being a convenient fender for them!!

We know of a sailing couple, one has a sailing qualification, is cool headed and a good sailor. The other loses their temper quickly, blames everyone else when it all goes wrong and is a bit of a panic.

Trouble is, he's a stronger character and always gets his way!

If you have to shout you've cocked it up. It took me a few years to realise that by which time I'd put one daughter off sailing for life. I still have to remind myself now and then.

There is a time when shouting is essential, i.e. when a crew member has placed him/her self in danger. Communicating the length of the deck in heavy weather is also a reasonable excuse.

I like Libby Purves' solution (in 'Casting Off'). The wife who had been shouted at took the boat leaving husband on the quay and disappeared over the horizon.

We're you there over the bank holiday Nicho? We we're and saw many of the same types of thing.

Much more than usual in fact - it was very windy on Saturday and chap in a "fisher" sort of boat nearly hit us when he lost control - cross wind/downtide.

Boats leaving berth Sunday morning still attached at the bow and the boat next to them - as they pivoted round and hit the boats berthed downtide.

Magic

We arrived on Sunday - just as they put the "Harbour full" signs out!! Managed to get in though. Came back on Wednesday - nice F4/5 up the chuff, though it rained solidly all the way to Hythe. Arrived like drowned rats!! All part of the fun I guess. We (unknowingly) followed Jimi down the Solent as far as Newtown Creek, where he peeled off (he was on his way back from Swanage bay).

Ahhh! Reminds me of a story......
And this is one I should not tell
Would all the girls please not read this....
Once upon a time, a long time ago,I was sailing with Dearheart, when I accidently shouted at her.
Later when she was kindly driving home, she innocently
said "Gosh, we have just driven over a purse in the road. Quick jump out and pick it up"
Being a tightwad, I jumped out and ran back to a squashed hedgehog or somesuch, looked up and saw her driving off.
After a long walk it dawned on me I was being taught a lesson. Never mess with a women!

Regards Briani

I know of one woman, who after being shouted at by her other half for 2 days , in the middle of a busy harbour when he started shouting again, just put the rope on the deck and side in a rather loud voice, "well do it yourself" and proceeded to go below and make a cup of tea for herself,
he was left to take the boat back out of the harbour, where he then droped anchor . luckily it was an electric one. they were seenlater that night in a very expensive restaurant he was doing some very sweet talking to his partner .

Nicho... I too would definitely not get away with shouting at SWMBO..... would be the end of my regaular sailing if I did..... besides... if I don't shout, then she will know when I do that its urgent!

Julie.... have you been talking to my better half?

Learned that a long time ago, you'll always end up regretting it /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

PS Do you think Nicho will regret this thread as he last "Why is it.......?" thread's still doing the rounds after 2 years /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

On Forethought, we solve this one by usually having me do the ropes, judging the gap, and Shirley doing the helm into the berth. I still have to shout over the engine noise though, and keep on getting told I am not shouting loud enough !

In fact on Sunday, we went for Yarmouth at 2200 due to commitments meaning we did not leave Hamble until 1800. Of course it was full so we spent the next 3 hours going to Studland. At the end of this , seven hours of Yanmar 1GM7 thudding away, we ended up selectively deaf and I had to go back to the cockpit and shout face to face while anchoring :-)
