Why do you call yourself .......

As some of the above contributers will know, 'shmoo' was a verb used to describe the process of optimising core storage operating voltages in the 60's. I'm not sure where that fits in with the scholars bit though.
My ID is pronounced bilge-rat but the easier spelled versions had all been allocated by my arrival. Being called William, talking rubbish and frequenting the dank nether regions in search of lost tools, it seemed a natural choice.
 
My boat is apparently Dutch, and I had just passed my 'Dazed Kipper' so I looked at one of those internet translation sites and asked what the Dutch was for Skipper, it replied Kapitein. My boat is called Sultan and I am her Skipper, hence Sultans_Kapitein. Quite mundane really.

We were called mamma_mia (until the spam problem) because we had just seen the movie and then joined the forum and needed a handle. Our new enforced name, if you have not worked it out, is our sign in name, our initials and the length of our boat - not showing off -
you should see the bills.
Still hoping benny and bjorn don't hit us with a bill for the avatar.

I joined this Forum in the late 90's as "NUTCRACKER" named after my 30ft Bruce Roberts, based in Brightlingsea.

A few years ago I bought my present yacht and we decided to change the name. I asked my then 8 year old son to name the yacht and he said he wants to call it "CAPTAIN FANTASTIC"

So I call my self after my yacht's names.

It comes from a ZX Spectrum game. Cant remember the game (maybe Hardball 3) but i entered the team name as Abes Team but the m was dropped and it resulted in Abes tea.
I thought this was great at the time (i believe i may have had a cup of tea in my hand at that moment as well which resulted in me being quite obnoxious saying " This is Abes Tea and this is Abestea" pointing to both myself and the tea) and it has stuck ever since.

Oh dear, i fear i have said too much... What a sad life i lead!
 
When I gave up my old career to start a new one, there was a time of relative inactivity so I managed to get some short term contract work at my old employer. After the third or fourth time, one of my colleagues sent an email around organising yet another leaving do, starting "boomerangben is leaving again....", Ben of course being my Christian name.
 
Fascadale is a small bay on the north coast of Ardnamurchan where there was a salmon bagnetting station. I spent a number of very enjoyable seasons living and working there many, many years ago.

I can also see the Fascadale buoy from my house.

The scary thing is that someone from Guernsey, called Bob, would think nothing of calling herself David_Jersey! :D

Malthouse is the name of my business, which itself came from being drawn to old brewery buildings. Having now moved to Alderney Malthouse is being used less and less as a trading name and so is largely relegated to my forum username.

Some cheeky wotsit even signed up for an eBay account using Malthousemarineandmotors, which was very annoying but what can you do about it but change that name too.

Were I to use a boat name I would soon wear down the mods with requests to change it, I am the very model of a very fickle boat owner.
 
Cos when I first registered on here I was boatless ( not recommended, time fills the gap with other equally frivolous but somewhat less rewarding 'stuff').

So, since I once had a little blueboat that I was very fond of and which had done everything that I asked of it and then some, well, it's obvious innit but, well, a bit boring.

And 'Captain Crash', 'Whoops!' were already taken.

Was not bothered about peeps knowing me or my details until one day in a debate someone who posts here decided to send me a text (not v nice). Then when I remonstrated with him he got the ump and started reporting me to the mods!
This from a man who hadnt got the balls to put any details about himself in his bio and used a pooter to send the text so that I couldnt text back or report him to his provider!
Since then I have been a bit more careful in putting contact details on here.

Because my name is Albert.
Many years ago I used to play roulette with a circle of close friends.
One of them ran an errand for his sister to buy a bottle of shampoo.
The shampoo he brought back was called Alberto VO5.
In the middle of a session, his sister walked in.
I was introduced as Albert.
But she had the bottle in her hand.
She decided to call me Alberto because she thought it to be err..."more romantic".
The other lads pounced on this and nicknamed me VO5.
Many years after the event, in that particular circle of friends, some of whom are sailors, "the nick sticks".:D
