Why do some people just annoy others without trying - and it might be me?

Well as one who is a big fan of fully battened mains used with lazyjacks but not StakPacks, also dislikes in-mast mains and grumpy people we could have some agreement but just not quite a full house next time we get to share a drink or two! What's your view on anchor alarms BTW?

PS Nothing against the look of StakPacks which can be rolled away anyway if the look bothers, just that when we had one on our W33 way back I felt it encouraged mildew on the sail. On the SL41 we just used a standard cover with lazyjacks stowed as inherited and went the same way when we later replaced it.

I think you my be ex RN, not sure, but SOP in RN tends to condition one to think a certain way that what they are doing, for the right reasons, is correct, so you do it that way. I wonder if he too was ex RN?

It is some considerable time since I served in the Royal Navy, and my memory may not be what it was, but one thing I cannot remember is there being any shortage of people willing to tell one that what one was doing was not correct. And in no uncertain terms!

You might be right! Although we bumped into him on the pontoon and he cut us dead, so it was a bit of a hint.

John - I always ask the next door boat how much chain he has got out - as he was there first, he holds all the cards. If I am there first and Italians or anyone for that matter anchor next to me, I will always tell them how much chain I am on, nicely of course, and nothing against Italians - except the 90 footer than nearly crushed us against the quay! It just helps them plan on how close they can come in a crowded anchorage.

I agree - and I do try to be nice to people.

Two problems - Firstly we anchored some way off him when we arrived and I never dreamt that we would swing so close... He certainly wasn't the nearest boat. Secondly, he was nowhere in sight when we arrived.

But hey ho - I'm not loosing too much sleep over someone who was crabby

I thought the same when visiting the new facility 2 years ago but now surpassed in the luxury league by the new eastern shower block at Port Solent, in winter feet are warmed by underfloor heating.

(now in Sutton Harbour which has super helpful and friendly staff... very impressed... and dramatically changed from when I sailed out of here in the 80's!)

Had the same excellent service last Thursday evening arriving at 8pm, the bloke loitering at the end of the pontoon happened to be the night watchman ready to take our lines which was appreciated since I was manoeuvring a 45 footer into an undersized berth. I assume the night watchman listens to the Sutton Harbour Lock VHF.
