They don't on my boat. All it requires is that you spend time training them to come alongside and then trust them to do it. The side issue here is are you willing to relinquish control in exchange taking pride in her achievements? If you reverse roles I can promise everyone will notice and envy you doing it right......
I dont think thats true.....
Anyway its important that both sides can park the boat in case of emergency etc.
I have seem men on the helm, shouting at their ladies who are stood on the bow with a line in their hand, telling them to jump a 5 foot gap. Heres my advice, learn to park properly before barking orders at someone else. You just end up looking like a big tit.
Cos standing at the bow whilst SWMBO sat 10 yards off a mooring bouy was frustrating ... mind you - she was doing it to annoy me... pretty good boat handling too!
My start in boating was a Competent Crew course and the Skipper was a young woman with strong view on this subject. As a result, I have never been allowed to bring the boat alongside, manouevre up to a buoy etc when SWMBO is on board.
To be fair SWMBO is now good at it. Unless we have to go backwards, but then you ought to see her reverse a car out of the drive. I cant look!
Not on our boat either- I much prefer rope pulling and it suits my lower intellect /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif The only thing we don't both do is pull the anchor up!!!!!! SWMBO is superb at helming up wind, I'm better off the wind and in following seas. SWMBO almost always does the parking, except when it goes wrong when muggins here, who has had no practice in ages is expected to get it right!
'Cos that's what she wants to do. Mrs White's only sailing instruction has been from me, which doesn't seem to have instilled a lot of confidence in her but that's the way she wants it. Whereas I - er - well, I've been doing it since I were a lad. Thus she is amazed at my ability to nonchalantly spin the boat on a sixpence in a marina, narrowly missing millions of pounds of assorted gin palaces; she thinks I am psychic 'cos I always know which way the tide is going and how the boat will react, etc. Mrs W on the other hand is a dab hand at pontoon leaping, as well as fending off the above gin palaces (with a deck broom, usually, to avoid scratches) and most importantly always does what I ask or tell her to do. In other words she is the perfect crew.
Mrs W does take the helm in open water, I would add, more than 50% of the time.
Only a pretty lady can pain a beautifull picture standing on the bow, while her ugly equivalent is hiding behinf the sprayhood... and thus at the helm.
Situation is reverse during backward parking, the aforementioned lady should be at the helming position while the ugly bugger is hiding... somewhere with the ropes.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Speaking entirely for self - Dear Heart does the driving stuff as she's better at it than me - she also used to helm when we raced dinghies as she is a better sailor - and I prefer crewing.
Dear Heart is also of a relatively slight build - which could never be a description one could attach to me, so my muscle can be better used if I'm despatched to do pontoon, mooring or anchoring jobs when arriving or departing.
But not in this case with SWMBO and I. She is a very good helmspartnerperson having done so under some pretty horrible conditions - but she does not believe she can handle the boat well despite clear proof to the contrary. The number of times I've encouraged her to do so is huge - all to no avail.
It has to be said however, that a suggestion from me to any member of my family seems to result in the opposite occuring /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
