As a classic wooden boat owner (and maintainer), I'd say it's because one can't see the 'to-do' list that the harsh light of day exposes.

The other night was a clear full moon and there was a twin masted classic yacht a couple of boats down the quai... the wife said I should go look at it as it was quite special (and probably photograph her)...I said I couldn’t be arsed...I’m glad I didn’t now..?(?)Sorry, but I do not agree.
