Why are new boats soooo ugly?

I think that's a wildly sweeping statement. I don't particularly like the design of that boat either but then my requirements of a boat would be vastly different from someone considering that.

Whether one likes the Gentleman's Yacht (and I've seen that boat upclose) is a matter of taste too. I like it for its nostalgia but it wouldn't be the boat I wanted to own.

Simply, because space sells. Who on earth would have a Sealine S41 instead of a Princess V42?

Answer, anyone who places accomodation as the first priority.

Bear in mind most guys who want boats have to get the idea past their wives. The bigger the cabin and the more room their "weekend cottage" has, the better.

Sad, but true. Hence boats like the Manhatten 50 /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Agreed. Would you rather stay in a cosy country cottage or a Hotel on Park Lane for that quiet relaxing weekend ? Sorry silly question, I have no idea what somebody with such spondulaks would do with their lives. Different planet / species. On my planet the Dolphin 16 reigns supreme (including the Perkins o/b). /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Why, oh why do designers think that you can just 'scale up' a design and still make it work IMHO.

The upper works don't seem to fit the hull. It may look better on a 40 footer (scaled down) but not at this size.

And I'm not viewing this as a yachtie, but as someone who has some artistic appreciation for design (and I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif)

Now that is a classic!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I had a toy one as a kid, pale blue deck, white hull, lovely looking boat (it's the one with the faired sides to the cockpit from the cabin roof sweeping down to the transom isn't it?)

Have you got any photos of it you can post?

I have to say that Sunseaker does look like one big ugly mould of plastic.

The 'Gentlemans Cruiser' looks fantastic but the 400 oak trees of wood would scare me silly on the maintenance front.

I class myself as being fairly young (32) but the currently available boats that strike me are the 'Grand Banks' range. I think they are a great compromise between classic styling and modern materials / design.

Sunseekers and the like are really moving away from my idea of boats.. Saying that have you looked at most new Cruise Liners.. Not exactly the pinacle of style in my book.

cheers,

Nick

Let's face it when you get to this size they all look like a bit like cross-channel ferrys. It's form following function.

If you tried to get the accomodation space of the 37M in the Gentleman's yacht you might as well stick paddle wheels on it and call it the Great Eastern.... Now that's a BOAT/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I hear what you say, but purely from a visual point of view Wouldn't you rather own the Great Eastern?? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The Sunseaker from the side looks like a Running Shoe for big people /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Great Eastern? What do you think I've asked Santa for?/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Sunseeker isn't to my taste at all. I'd rather have a Bavaria 42 hardtop. Totally meets my desires, I mean NEEDS /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Strewth Poor ol Rudolph... Best you give Santa an Extra Mince Pie for that 'little' prezzie /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
And thats gonna be one serious roll of wrapping paper!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Have to agree, when I saw it I thought what an ugly heap. Being delivered to Eddie Jordan, sporting the name from his 105 'The Snapper'

Where did he get that name from!. I know some of us have strange names, but 'The Snapper'????????????????????????

Well it's a personal taste thing, but for my taste I have to agree. Many of the newer designs from the big four have become rather ugly, look more like plastic space craft from the set of star wars than motor boats and certainly not like little ships. Too much white, not enough mahogany, and windows exhibiting the personality traits of art designers in need of counselling. I know I'm going be flamed for saying that. I don't have a problem with them though, and know a lot of people like them. How much people like designs because of their subliminal subservience to marketing of what is the 'in' fashion, or because of personal taste I know not. But marketing works and a percentage of consumers can be lead.

My pet hates in modern boat design interiors
<ul type="square">[*]Sterile bland modern interiors lacking enough wood
[*]Curvy squinty eyed windows
[*]Window blinds instead of curtains
[*]Black/Grey carbon fibre boy racer helm consoles
[*]Cheery wood interiors (so shiny it looks plastic)
[*]White plastic inside boat
[*]Aluminium or Stainless steel trim on interiors
[*]Modern Furniture
[*]Leather Upholstery
[*]Forward master Cabins
[/list]
On the outside I dislike boats that waste 40% of the boats potential cubic capacity on french window aft decks full of useless sun lunges, 4ft bathing decks, steep ladders to fly bridge, narrow or non existent side decks, and my greatest pet hate high free board. Now in fairness that’s because I boat around these damp and dreary isles, but can see the advantage of exterior accommodation space in warmer climates. Too many large mobos though seem to be designed for day boating (ie over grown speed boats), rather than cruising comfort and living space. Two helms seems daft idea, why not one really well designed one that can the sheltered or open rapidly - free up space inside the saloon.

Look it's horses for courses - each on to their own, but I prefer boats to look like boats or little ships, with a bit of wood and brass. Modern art is for the art gallery not my holiday home on the water.

Probably the same as in the Commercial and Military sector.

Original concept design - beautiful. Then during practical planning and build - ammendments and addittions insisted on by the purchacer, builder and experts; turn it into something completely different.

Seems like you're ready to go Broom then.
Quick grab your pipe and slippers!

I think the Sunseeker is beautiful and so modern, why on earth would you want to go back to an all natural materials boat that rots easily and can't be replaced as the trees are all gone.

And such performance from super massive engines!
Go Sunseeker Go! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
