Noticed in marinas, during my sailboat tidal dayskipper practical and elsewhere that generally people who motorboat are nicer than people who sail, why is that? Many people who sail seem to have a stick up their *** like we say in Swedish?

Any thoughts on this fascinating subject? ;) i love sailing, my wife just doesnt like people who sail, and often I agree with her..

Can't say that I've noticed a difference either way. We've met a lot of nice people with motor, sail or combination (and about same mix of rarer ignorant ***** types). We were members of the Royal Scottish Motor Yacht Club but dropped that when we changed boat from motor-sail type to sail and left Scottish waters. Some people had a "them & us" attitude but still had a live & let live style on the boat.

Maybe it's a Scottish thing and they are a nicer lot than the area where you sail (unlikely but possible). Perhaps you have just been unlucky (or you always wear a T-Shirt with a big "Sails are for wimps legend" :D).

I have found, on only a few rare occasions, one or two raggie types who have a bit of a superiority complex.
I wonder if it because they understand what all those ropes do, I believe they call them sheets, and we stinkies just point and go?
Saying that, I have friends of both genres and and am currently trying to hitch a ride on a big saily boat but it was pointed out to me, very politely I may add, that there is no such thing as a passenger on a sailing boat.!
Until I offered to bring the beer of course! ;-)

I am bored of these shxt stiring rubbish posts, it is daft to go on a public forum and to ask the question which is, why one group of people is nicer than another.

In most peoples opinion I am confident that it is seen as pointless.

Please, no more Raggies comments YAWN!
Any right minded person will agree, that as with most things there is good and bad in everything

Didn't hear anyone arguing, just that the OP posted his post and got slated for it.
By a very in interesting reply.

Am surrounded by rag and stickers where I live. Even have a couple of em living either side of me.
They like their type boating and we like ours.
If they have a superiority complex it probably neatly makes up for us MoBoers inferiority complex.
Having a friendly dig every now as we pass in the street (and on the intererweb) now and then is all part of the fun.
Do not take it to seriously for Gawds sake.

I would suggest that anyone 'bored' by a thread on the forum probably spends too much time on here. Don't you have boats or something to entertain you?

Well said Dave. Also it's not compulsory to read things you are not interested in. I agree with the OP that (Solent) sailors are more snobby then moboers but I put this down to jealousy! Luckily I am nowhere near that particular boating lake.

You probably are basing your view on the raggies general aversion to school boats. A boat approaching at speed with one or two people stood on the coach roof aimlessly holding onto fenders and another on the wheel looking like a rabbit caught in the headlights doesn't engender feelings of welcome.

My experience is that most raggies and stinkies are ok on the whole, I even let stinkies come over and take my lines for me sometimes if they ask....;)

Why do you think they would be jealous, they have a sailing boat as 1st choice not 2nd best. It's that sort of superior idea from some stinkies that they find amusing. Most raggies wouldn't give you a thank you for a motor boat, they are more likely to be jealous of someone with a nicer sailing boat.
