Whoever said boating was glamorous is a liar. Take it from me.

On a wet and windy Saturday for no reason other than we could and we wanted to we set off from the marina on what would be our last outing before we go away in a couple of weeks. The run upto Lincoln doesnt go bad and the weather looks like it might brighten up so we head off to Fiskerton. Once we have decended Stamp End Lock however things start to go downhill from there.

The River Witham is currently very weed infested and even 170hp isnt enough to keep you ploughing through. So every kilometer or so we needed to stop and deweed the props. No problem we will make it eventually there is no rush. Until clunk. We pick up a piece of wood between the props and smash the props in good and proper. We hadnt even seen the wood for the weed.

We eventually moor up at Fiskerton to survey the damage and it isnt good. They will need sending away for refurbing and quickly. No worries these things happen. So we moor up and settle in for the night only to now find that the bathroom light has packed up as well. This trip really aint going well but it is set to get even worse. We had emptied the holding tank prior to setting off and flushed it through with fresh water. We now needed to get rid of the fresh water. So we press the macerator button to find to our horro it aint working, just creating a dead short.

So on a miserable, wet sunday morning, in the middle of a nature reserve we set about dismantling the midships cabin to find the pump and the cause of the problem. Armed with bucket loads of disinfectant and warm water Liam, the brave soul, delves into the unknown and resurfaces with the offending item. He is quickly ejected onto the wet pontoon where he sets about dismantling the disgusting pump. It is soon apparent that the thing is clogged up with hair and the remains of a wet wipe. Moral of the story if you have guests aboard or anyone uses your loo make sure they know what can and can not go down it. The pump is eventually reassembled but not before we have to track down a new impellor for it.

It is all now working again but it is safe to say this weekend has not gone according to plan.

Wow, you certainly had it all at once. Let's hope you now get months on trouble free cruising :-)

I seriously doubt it. We are off to the Norfolk Broads for a couple of weeks next weekend so it will no doubt be a catalouge of misfortune and errors :D

I have one like that, too scared to investigate atm! Fortunately its in the outles if not using the holding tank so normally a non-vital component.

Its a very unpleasant job and one we dont wish to repeat in the near future. At least we have now tackled it and know how to fix it if the need ever arises again. I hope it doesnt.

My black tank and merc are in the engine bay. The grey tank and pump are below the mid berth. I think I would rather tackle the black stuff in the engine bay,as there is a bit more room, and better ventilation!!

I hope you have a great time on the Broads. We had many fantastic hols there on hire boats, and kept our own cruiser there for a couple of seasons. I'd still be there now, but it is such a trying run from the Midlands, at least 3 hrs each way!

Not much room in our engine bay. The black tank is under the saloon floor and totally inaccessible without ripping apart the interior. The pump thankfully is remote of the tank and located under the bed, along with the water tank, various bits of wiring and plumbing, the shower sump and pump and various other oddities.

We are really looking forward to visiting the Broads again. We too have had many happy hire boat holidays there so are looking forward to getting there in our own boat. Just need to dodge the hire boats and moor in sensible places methinks :)

One of the real pleasures of the Broads is the ability to moor almost anywhere. Hire boats can be a bit of a trial, but the only really frustrating bit is the Ant up to Stalham. Very picturesque, but quite narrow. Horning and Wroxham can get busy too. Seldom a problem on the Southern rivers, but not quite so pretty IMO.

We are making a bee line for the Northern Broads after entering at Lowestoft. We also much prefer the Northern side. Although a quick glance at the Wroxham webcam came up with this:

so we may rethink our plans a little :D

At least you would bounce off!!

It really is great fun observing the holiday hire boater. The throttle is binary, full onn or off, steering a matter if huge twirling, and much shouting at wife and children, wih captians hat askew!!

Ah yes. Much the same as watching newbie boat owners in the marina. Endless hours of free entertainment :D
