The Pete Goss thread below got me thinking....

Maybe Bob Roberts? Interesting boats, a professional sailorman, wit, raconteur and musician.

Given the breadth of his experience from Suhaili to maxi cats to Admiral's Cup to the Whitbread RTW, I think I'd find Robin Knox-Johnston the most interesting company and a very accomplished seaman so I'd learn plenty as well.

When you have her at your mercy a few miles off shore,
Is this when the F.S or D. ruling comes into effect?

Myself ...

Otherwise those that I know and trust.

We've all been down the route where we have picked crew at random and have lived to regret it ... or have been picked to crew for a 'famous' sailor and have lived to regret ever having set foot on his/her boat. Equally sometimes we have fortunately picked up a vagabond who has been good crew .... and sometimes have been privileged to learn and share on a passage from a 'famous' captain.

So overall, the only persons that I trust are those that I have crewed with who have also crewed with me.

At sea, whether 10 miles or 1500 miles offshore, IMO, the common bond is total sailability, compatibility and 110% trust ... and there are a number of 'famous' sailors that I would never sail with again, just as there are some who have crewed for me :) :) :)

I'd really like to sail with NigelCh as he is such an interesting converationsalist as well as being very good with his hands and having lots of money.

Captain Bligh

Just to see if he really was such a sadistic so and so.

Probably one of the greatest sailor's though.

Re: Captain Bligh

You read his log book, Vic? What shines through to me, is a skipper devoted to the health of crew. I believe that by the standards of his day, he was not overly vicious eg lower incidence of lashings than Capt Cook.

Charles Laughton has a lot to answer for.
