Anyone moor there boat in Spain, if so any advice, or link to the marina you are in, would be great. Seriously thinking to get the most use out of it, it needs to be somewhere warm.easy to get to, close to an airport, and advice appreciated.thanks guys

We do 30 miles south of Alicante.
Mooring for 12m boat 2500 euros a year.
We have been around the Costa blanca @ 15 years so ask aw

We keep keep ours in Sant Carles, along with quite a few other forumites. http://www.mdlmarinas.co.uk/mdl-sant-carles-marina

An hour north or south by car to the 2 nearest airports - Castellon (“Valencia North”) and Reus (“Barcelona south”) respectively. We are based in Kent so Gatwick, Southend and Stansted are pretty much equidistant for us. Car hire, out of school holidays, has been as cheap as €7 for 10 days.

It’s an MDL Marina, so part of a big UK Marina group. Renting a 12m berth from the Marina will be c€4,800, but renting privately will be considerably less.

If you search the forum, there is plenty of discussion about “SCM”....

There are lots of people on here who keep their boats in various places around the med not just Spain, we keep ours in mallorca, but it costs quite a lot more than the examples above.

Thanks guys. Im researching everything you have all put forward. I take it, you would find somewhere that was convenient to airport/s, then is it the case that you would always fly to Spain, or would you ever drive? North East Spain isnt that far too drive I dontthink? But i expect fuel costs etc its going to be cheaper using a cheap airline.
Do you leave literally everything on your boat when you arent there? Is it safe? Is anyone looking out for you in your absence. ?What about cleaning, Iwould love someone to clean my boat before arrival, and set it up so i would be walking into heaven lol! How long would you say the boating season is out there. ? I would not want to live there, but going out every 3 or 4 weeks for me, say for a week is doable for me.Im fortunate that my work is internet based, so a good internet connection is vital. Does the three network work ok in the marinas. ? Sorry for all the questions, if you only want to answer one or two thats fine!

You can pay people to look after the boat in your absence and clean it the day you arrive, its called gardienage.

The marinas in mallorca always seem pretty safe, I haven't heard of anyone's boat being broken into.

The season is a long or short as you want it to be, for mallorca most people season is probably may to October, but it can still be better than a British summer outside this window.

One more thing, certainly for mallorca (and prob for a lot of other places) in the winter a lot of the airlines reduce the number and frequency of their flights, making it harder to just go for a long weekend.

I always fly as I am still working. Door to door for us is 1007 miles by road. Via Michelin suggests £130 in tolls each way.

We now travel with barely any hand luggage as everything is left on board, and the marina is pretty secure.. but berth holders do look out for one another, and there are 1 or 2 Guardianage firms. The one we use washes the cockpit, dusts etc downstairs and puts aircon on for us in advance of arrival, so we can turn the key and go...

We try and go out in March, and shut her down in October. Not sure about 3 (but answer is “highly likely”) but we use a Vodafone dongle, and I can work using that.

Jumping on a few planes to do your research is half the fun... but as others have said ICC for 10m+ and VHF qualifications are a must... as is air-con in the hot months...

Everybody starts with the intention of using it all year round however the winter can still be grimand Easter can be awful. But you can get some nice weekend if you're able to book last minute. Also, there's no need to winterize the boat and for us the winter mothballing is virtually non existent.

As for cleaning etc, ask around in the marina and you should fine a local girl / lady who can collect the dirty bedding and re-make the beds.

Regarding security, the decent marinas have loads of marineros helping people berth, keeping an eye on the boats, etc. Our berth isn't behind a locked gate but crime seems to be pretty low. We do however take portable equipment home for the winter meaning that there's very little left on board that can be stolen.

As for "Three" mobile, you may need to be flexible and go with the operator that has the best coverage in your immediate. vicinity.

Boating season in Spain is all year if you want. In the winter months the sea is often flat as a pancake, great for doing longer trips. March and April it often rains.
this pick was taken in February this year, had to wear a jumper though ;-)

I have been in Spain for 15 years and have been everywhere from GIB to Roses in the North and all the islands, let us know if you need any specific information.
I would start with where you are in the UK ad where you can get flights to.
Then cost might be the next consideration but I would seriously recommend a marina with 30 mins or so from the Airport as if you do weekends you don't want to spend hours to get there.
I would favour Alicante area as its easy to get to Ibiza etc and it have major airports to fly to and it has towns which are all year round and not just a short summer season.

What does ICC mean? Are you saying that 10 metres will be the biggest boat i can purchase? If so thats fine, i didnt wnt to go any bigger than that anyway
International Certificate of Competence. Not required in the UK but to sail abroad (even a day trip to France) you will need one. See petem's post above.

This may have changed but AFAIK, there are, effectively, two ICCs (one ICC but two different endorsements)
If you take the test on a boat less than 10m, you only get a 10m endorsement.
If you take the test on a boat bigger than 10m, you get the bigger than 10m endorsement.
Thats how it used to work - maybe someone will confirm or rubbish my comment.

Sant Carles Marina - mid way between Valencia and Barcelona.
Probably the cheapest place to keep a boat.
Lots of Brits here
We run a marina internet discussion forum called www.scmchat.com (The CHAT)
Run by berth holders for berth holders.
No connection with MDL - just berth holders.
Lots of comments and information on the CHAT.
