Who makes a small manual windlass?

You're looking for something like this ?

This is a 25ft Motor sailer boat and the winch is an older Lewmar Manual. It has dual function .... rope drum and chain gypsy. It has freewheel and locked facility.
They are still to be found occasionally in Second-hand outlets but to be honest because of their strength and reliability are often expensive ....
Mine still works perfectly without any signs of wear / tear ... but has not been serviced for many years ... in fact when I spoke to a yard guy about it ... he advised to leave alone ! He checked it, tested it ... and remarked - as usual ... with these fine.

One factor that I found out .... it is not so critical about chain calibration either ... not like some more modern ones we can think of !

Hi,
On my previous 32 ft. boat, I had a Simpson-Lawrence manual windlass. I have now downsized to a much smaller boat, but alass, I can't find any company that even makes a manual unit, let alone something small enough. Any ideas or source would be appriceated.
Cheers.

Excatly!!! I had the same excelent SL manual windlass, which inspite of many comments when made about haveing a bike chain drive it worked faltlessly! And you cant find a S/H decent one anywhere!!

Lofrans is very poor and vetus is a lofrans with their name on it. i had one untill i found my SL! I posted looking for a small manual one about a year ago i wanted(cant remember the make but i will in a moment!) one id seen but today there only sold with a 500w or 1000w motor!!!!

Im watching this thread carfuly!! It is amazing that there are so few good manual windlasses today??

THATS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just came hear to post that windlass i would like was like the SL anchorman! That id been advised to find something like it with a broken motor as they dont make them anymore!!!

Last year i found someone selling them, they had bought the rest of the SL stock but their prices were eye watering!!

Im off to look at that link!! Thanks!

Looked! Lewmar make it now! and also the hyspeed 701/702 which is what i had before! Really good it was to big fom my current boat sadly!

Prices the chain rope horizontal now costs £359! That used to cost £150!!The hyspeed which now costs £501 used to cost £250!!!I though things were getting less expensive!!And SL wasent cheep!!Good products though!

There used to be a lofrans silver manual which has a rope drum as well as chain gypsy,as did the SL anchorman GD which cost £170 wonder if Lofrans still make it?

Thats a really good link!!!! I shall bookmark that!!! Thanks!

I agree, the Royal is a very nice bit of kit. It's heavey, but then it should last for ever; though like all of them, it will last longer if you fit a cover.

Trouville - look at the link again. They still do both the one with the Gypsy - the "G" and also the gypsy & drum - the "GD" in both 8 & 10mm.

Cover ?

Mines over 20 yr old and never been under cover ..... rain etc. washes salt etc. away.

Re: Cover ?

Trouville - Should have added the gyspy only model is £296, the one with gypsy & drum is £359. Still expensive though.

Re: Cover ?

Im so pleased to find this link and that i can still find a really good windlass i happy thank you, really really for the links!

The price.Well double,is i suppose the price.

I couldent justify the expense then so i bought the hyspeed second hand from an artisan in Cannes i paid £100 or 1000Ffr(when there was real money)(he was realy ok bought my sand paper from him as well--now hes retired why?)

I might just buy if i really cant find S/H otherwise just go on useing a sheet winch!

Thanks for the links there realy useful bookmarked!

As for the lofrans basic manual its perhaps why SL called theirs Highspeed!!There twice as fastand twice as good and then only £20 more costly!!!Also fat the scotich hyspeed was "thin" fast and good!and the lewmar no doubt still is!

Thanks for the info guys! I guess that maybe my best solution will be to keep an eye open for a used SL unit somewhere. Last year I visited the Lewmar display at our local Halifax Boat Show and the rep there didn't even mention that they had a manual unit. The only models they had there were huge lecccy jobbys that would have set the bow down on my little Nordic-Halman below her marks.!
Thanks again.
