Who is next to me? From SSR number

you don`t have to fill in all the fields......just the boat name and nationality will do for a start

Yes, you might get the owner's surname - not a lot of help!

Sorry my question is so wierd!! I have to leave my boat here over winter. I will be out here a couple of times but not as often as I would like. The boat next to me looks to be in a similar position. It would be nice to contact them so that we could check each others boats when we visit and have communication to say 'alls well etc'

If there was damage involved, then I'm sure the office would have supplied details, or at least offered to forward a message.

That they didn't do either suggests to me that they are respecting the privacy of the owner - something I heartedly approve of in this ever-increasingly databased world.

Knowing the name of the person you are looking for is an enormous help.......and...the OP MAY have damaged this person`s boat and wants to contact him to make recompense...YOU just don`t know... er...(and neither do I)..Though I do realise this forum is stuffed with people who have little else to do but make thousands and thousands of unhelpful , negative and cynical replies because they think it reflects well on them....well , it doesn`t...quite the reverse

I've used the Ships Particulars database a number of times, but I've found that merely having a surname is of ery little use in trying to locate someone - unless of course it's a unique surname. Can you explain how only knowing someone's surname is, in your opinion, an "enormous help"?

While the marina, quite rightly, won't give you his details, they might be persuaded to pass on a note if you supply the envelope and postage.

Because you then have a name to go with the boat.....and , presumably, a tongue in your head ..and you can start asking questions, googling, facebook, twitter etc...and sooner or later....bingo..... Have you never heard of the book "Six degrees of Separation".... ?....It has been "proved"... that...provided people aren`t trying to hide.... then someone will know someone....who will know someone......etc.. times about 6...who will know the person you want to contact.... and it really is all about determination.. (unless you are unlucky)

Makes good sense to me, we always keep an eye on each other's boats and have phone no's to contact if any problems.

I don't think the question was at all 'weird' - just naive.

Although the OP's motives appear 100% honourable, and then some ... one problem to be faced by those dishing out owner's contact info is that not everybody in this world is honest.

For if you know where someone is - that you also have a pretty good idea where they're not, i.e. if the owner is back home in Blightly, then they'd be highly unlikely to be walking down the pontoon just as their winches are being removed and whisked away ...

Sorry to be so naive!! Of course knowing someones address does NOT mean that he WONT be walking down the pontoon when I'm nicking his gear!!
