White ensign on a \"ordinary\" yacht

While sailing around Mallorca, I saw a sailing yacht in a marina flying a white ensign. I did not have the opportunity talk to the skipper.
Are there circumstances that an "ordinary" sailing yacht might fly a white rather than red ensign? I suppose the yacht could be a Royal Navy training yacht, but there was no indication of this

If the master of the yacht is a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron and has the appropriate, in date warrant, and his yacht conforms to loa requirement and is not being used for commerial purposes - yes.

My Blue is so faded it is often confused for a White. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The Royal Yacht Squadron is the only yacht club empowered to grant warrants to wear the white ensign.

A Royal Naval training vessel would have a Blue Ensign defaced with an anchor.

He would be a Royal Yacht Squadron member and Skipper/Master of the said vessel.

I haven't heard that they are not 'legal' outside UK waters??????

I heard that the warrant was issued by UK for UK waters only, for both defaced blue and white, maybe I'm wrong, but dont care anyway!!

I know of one man on this forum who could sort all this out, he's on the thames forum, Byron!!

No, the warrant does not specify any area. From recollection (mine is so old and tattered) it says something like:

"In recognition of supreme sailing, navigation, personal and social skills, bravery, fortitude, selflessness and modesty it is the pleasure of the First Sea Lord to confer upon you the small honour of this Warrant. Wear your colours with pride and take no notice of those mealy mouthed jealous gits - especially from the pricipalities who may seek every opportunity to rubbish you and take particular delight when you cock up mooring your long keeled MAB"

Or something like that.

Of course, this only applies to proper warrants from service clubs. Not the red bally things you can buy by filling in a direct debit form.

Presumably not on one of your commercial fleet and on a warranted vessel. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Both skipper and vessel are named on the warrant.

No thanks. I prefer to stay within the common sense interpretation of the law/regulations/custom/directives.

(delete any, or all you are not happy with).

Wear a Scottish saltire instead. You'll get no problems from anyone, just plain bewilderment

Yes, I normally go out all of the time. However I am in a one horse Portuguese village babysitting my four year old whilst my ex wife is away having a good time. Sadly, during this period this forum is the only 'adult' conversation I have. I use the word 'adult' with some reservation.

Anything else you need to know?
