What stops them buying white?

I buy white all the time. Rock up at the pump and fill a Jerry can. Simples.

While the pump is not on the dock I'd prefer the turn over of a garage rather than stale red in a marina, says man who had the diesel bug after filling with red.
Not everyone has a 100l fuel tank. Some people buy 600l or more at a fill up.

If Sandy is going round Scotland and is worried about low turnover of red he should avoid marinas and fill up at fishingports like Kinlochbervie or Lochinveror Gairloch where 5000 litres is a small order, he will pay less for it there too. (2019 Tobermory £1.20 per l. at Lochinver 91p.)

Tobermory is one place where I would definitely recommend white diesel. From memory the pontoon (red) pump has a minimum purchase of 35 litres. The garage will sell you white or red in cans but the white was cheaper the last time I was there. Road fuel is subsidised to match mainland prices while red gets no such subsidy and even with 40:60 ends up a tad more expensive.
In some other parts, local garages sell red into cans and have no interest in the purpose for which it may be used or in fiddling about with tax.

Not really worried. Will fill up in Kirkwall and hopefully that should last me until I get to Plymouth. If I need any more I'm sure I can find a filling station near any of the places in planning to visit

Make a stop at cowes to fill up. I had to have a double take last week as I was dodging the ferries going up river, but a filling jetty there was showing 75p per litre. I thought I was in a tax free haven - IOW !!

Either that or the pound sign prior to the pence sign had fallen off !
