Hi Gang,

i a,m very much new to the motorboat world - coming across form sailing. I have been doing much research but I am not sure whihc type of boat I want / suits my needs.

I would like a boat to meets as many as the following requirements. The ideal boat may not be out there, but I am seeking the best compromise:

Cheap (I'd like to spend less than £30K)
Offers some sort of accommodation for two adults - camping style is totally fine but having room to lie down and sleep is a big bonus.
As small as possible but still offers a bed for two and room for 4 big adults in the cockpit for day sailing (I'd like to be able to trailer it and store at my yard)
Does not need to be particularly fast, but a comfortable cruise speed of 15 - 20 knots would be very nice.
No real need for serious water-sports or serious fishing ability. The boat will be used to tootle about the coast, swim from, the odd bit of light fishing, maybe a BBQ and a few beers, perhaps tow a ring the odd time.
Ideally I'd love a boat that could make the 30 odd mile crossing from Ireland to Scotland - but I am totally unsure of what type of boat is required to do this reliably (appreciating that in perfect weather practically any boat can make this crossing) but I feel that this would be very much outside the 30K budget and would need a 8 or 9m boat (the wrong side of £50K?)
I'd love something that offers protection for the driver 9 like a pitlot house or cuddy.
I have no interest in ribs - sorry.

Things I have been looking at include pilot house. Merry Fisher type boats (7m or less), Quicksilver Activ cabin range (priced a New 555 cabin) Warrior 175 Leisure (doesnt offer any accommodation and I wouldn't fancy taking it any further than a mile or 2 from the shore) - Do any of these suit? Any suggestions welcomed please.

Thanks for the responses guys, very much appreciated.

I looked at a Orkney Pilothouse and they seem good, is camping on one a possibility?

Unfortunately the starfish is too large and expensive, I'll forego the accommodation to keep costs and size down. I think I'd like to be ideally less than 8m length. And more like 6m.

The plastic pilot house style boats are not bad but not ideal for accommodation for 4. I had a 755 marlin for a while and it was not a comfortable sea boat.

If you could stretch your budget a bit, 10m gets you a much more comfortable and capable boat - something like this would be pretty good IMO

Starfish 10, Shotley, Suffolk - Ad 117584

Sorry to clarify I only need sleeping room for 2. I would need sitting room for 4 on a short day trip.

An older boat, but fits the bill in many ways is a Channel Islands 22 with a 140hp engine, will cruise happily at around 14kts. They were all delivered from the CIs to mainland U.K. on their own hulls and having owned one I can vouch for their sea worthiness.

The CL22 actually looks quite good. Not trailerable but hits the other marks well. Something to research. Thanks all all the input guys.
