I never realised until sailing last week that there were two apps called windy, and that my mate had a different one to me.

Mine is windy.com and the app icon has a red background with a white logo and wee yellow crown, and his was windy.app and the icon has a blue background with a white radar screen style icon.

Mine is circa £25 pa, his wanted £99 pa, though is now offering a half price deal.

Which one do you use and if you have used both, which do you prefer and why?

I presume its the same info from the same models just repackaged.

Edited: I misunderstood the poll and was not aware of the blue windy.

I do have the windy app (red) and can login on Windy.com

I have a premium account which is 22 quid a year. By far the best weather app. Well worth paying the nominal amount for premium if only to keep it going.

With a tin of cold baked beans in me, I use Tesco windy app ( sorry - I know it is a crap joke and not even in the joke forum)

I wish you the best.

Windguru stopped being accurate years ago.

Accuweather is not always accurate.

They may both be websites and not apps.

Hope this at least bumps your thread up to top inspire if my lack-lustre joke attempts.😊

Ah not as sophisticated as predictwind then. Shame, PW will never get money from me again!
You pay PW? I have never liked their hard sell approach. Another firm noted their aggressive marketing - eg

“The most accurate weather data on earth.

PredictWind delivers the world’s most accurate forecast data, with the top ranking regional, global and hi-res forecast models.”

Yes, they do, as does anyone else who distributes forecast output from ECMWF, NOAA etc.

PW used to have descriptions of the various models. These texts contained errors. They used to describe how they produced PWE and PWG. Previously, they used PWC. Anyone reading these descriptions and with understanding would have seen that their detailed models were not using any detailed data input. Without any description they are now black boxes. If they are the same as they used to describe, I would never dream of using them. They used to claim that a 2-member ensemble had value. At one time, in an online discussion it was clear that PW did not know that models are smoothed.

I've always relied on Passageweather. I've no idea if it's any better or worse than WindyTY or Predictwind, but it is far more relaxing. I don't want to be looking at a red tinted screen when the forecast wind's barely 20 knots, give me, a nice soothing blue and save the scary colours untill it reaches 30+

I also pay yearly to windy.com. It provides some extras, but it is a good app and I also think it deserves some money to keep it going?

I just use the windy.com website in a browser, no cost, no app to install. What am I missing out on?
Nothing wrong with that although I prefer Ventusky. Free, wide range of models if you really think that is important.

Passageweather is a good, clear presentation of GFS/ ECMWF/COAMPS although the last seems currently not available. Good for latest sea temperature. It is somewhat inflexible but easy to use and commendably clear.

For a quick look I usually use Ventusky because I like its clarity. It has several models, global, regional and national. When cruising I prefer the somewhat nerdy Saildocs. I can get a daily email sent automatically for as long as I wish. The big plus is that the whole forecast is saved for later reference when I nay not be online and to compare with earlier/ later forecasts. As I want to monitor forecasts for up to 10 days, I use GFS and ECMWF.

Edited - As the messages are in Binary (GRIB) format, they are just about as small as possible and particularly useful when using Satphobes.

I did once. Never will again. The service was fine and I found value in the routing.

When I cancelled they cut the service immediately with no refund despite 8 months remaining that had been paid for. Utter crooks and I advise everyone to avoid them as a result. If it weren’t for their business practices I’d have resubscribed for at least two years, and I’d estimate 10 or so friends and colleagues would have too (lost business thanks to me). I’m very proud of any damage I can do to their business unless and until they change.
