I will be taking my boat out soon and polishing the whole thing. I have decided on what to do to get the gelcoat clean, I now need to decide what to use as a polish. I have not seen any good arguement against silicon polish but I am also happy to use wax. For me the important thing is to protect the gelcoat, shine/gloss is less important. I am prepared to use different products for different parts of the boat if required.

Looks like she may have some sticky out bits that may damage the gelcoat.

Got to be a line about elbow grease somewhere but I cant put my finger on it ...

As you probably know, the argument against silicon as used in car polishes is that it needs to be removed when the time comes to paint the topsides which can be difficult.

Usually I use Starbrite wax polish, but this syear I have been using their Polymer stuff which is applied in the same way. The results on the topsides have been quite good, and seems to have protected a small area of discoloured gel better than wax. On the coachroof the results have been less obvious and I have repolished a couple of times, mainly to remove dirt.

do a search on this topic.
I think it depends on how fanatical you want to be, and quite what you expect. I ve always found the teflon polish quite easy to apply and reasonably effective. £13 is going to do two seasons at least! But then I dont really expect the boat to dazzle me with its mirror like finish from the other side of the marina!

My wife has used Mer for several years on a few of our boats and is always pleased with the results. A couple of coats on lift out then one before launch (after cleaning off any dirt). Lots of comments about how new the boat looks even though our last one was 15 years old when we sold her.

Mer usually have a stand at the Boat Show if you are going or I believe you can now get it in Halfords.

Meguiars...

Try a couple of coats of Meguiars #45 Boat Polish followed by one or two coats of Meguiars #56 Pure Wax. It's all very easy to apply by hand and polishes off effortlessly by hand.

Sorry, but I don't buy any of this nonsense about silicone polish. Cars get repaired and repainted every day, and most of them have been treated at some time or another to a polish with a silicone based product. Autoglym for example!

I will continue to use silicone polish on my boat, and continue to receive comments from others in the marina about how good it looks. I will also continue to use Maplin silicone/PTFE spray on my sail slides and silicone sealant on anything that I want a waterproof joint on, which I may have to take apart some day.

Each to their own .
