Which Tablet Computer/

I have bought to one for my daughter one for me. Mine (Archos) was OK until I stupidly put micro usb charger in upside down once to often.

Daughters is has been back once and even though she is only young I would replace with bottom end Galaxy Tab or Nexus as you can feel the difference.

A week ago PC World were undercutting John Lewis on Samsung tablets as they were operating a 'cash back' stunt where you reclaim £10 cashback per. £100 spent. £30 quid back on an 8" Note. Probably off now until the Christmas rush fades?

Do JL have a better warranty @ 2 yrs

I did consider that, but I decided that mass produced stuff like this which lasts a year will usually survive two, but then I am an optimist who never buys extended warranties even when the cost is disguised in the price. Unfortunately the 'cash back' format means you can not ask John Lewis to price match.

I understand that under EU regulations that goods are guaranteed for 2 years anyway to be of merchantable quality (fit for purpose). Most shops will not tell you that but if you take something back and raise this point they will usually concede.John Lewis are not really giving you something that you are not entitled to anyway.
I am not knocking them as I shop there and they have so far price matched other shops.

I admit to being a perfectly happy iPad user. I also have a 3 year old grandson and a 5 year grandaughter who within seconds of arriving at my house will have snaffled my iPad. So for Christmas I have bought them one each. For the 5 year old I have bought an iPad mini and the 3 year old, a Nexus 7. Having set them both up so that they will work straight out of the box, I have to say that the nexus appears equally as good as the iPad, but for half the price. The screen is bright and clear, the touch works well and the android operating system is very similar. I'm impressed. The 5 year old has developed more of a label appreciation than her cousin so will be happier with the iPad. Time will tell whether the nexus stands up to the treatment of a 3 year old boy! Merry Christmas everyone. Alan

No it's just that they are the best ones really. I don't. Suffer from the syndrome. I get mine free from work

In your opinion or for your use perhaps. My android tablets have been just as expensive as iPads but I prefer them. There's no better or worse tablet, any more than there's a better or worse boat or girlfriend/wife. It's just which one you get along with best...

If it must be Android then go for Nexus.

On the Apple point though, you say it's unjustifiable but are assuming that the usage would be the same either way. I've owned various makes and models and know many others who do too and the Apple ones tend to be used considerably more. The cost per use is therefore more justifiable. If you take the longer view then Apple devices are actually cheaper since they hold their value much better for resale. If you can't afford one then fair enough but there is more to cost justification than purchase price :)

No Elton, I'm not on commission :)

i don't know how you arrive at the conclusion that iPads get used more than Android tablets. Apart from anything else there's a profusion of Android tablets in various shapes and sizes, and even two distinct iPad sizes. I don't know any organisation that has managed to successfully measure usage.

Nexus is a long way from the default choice in Android too. Then tend to be reasonable value for a decent spec and get the very latest Android of course but you miss out on a whole load other things. I have a Nexus 7 but my 10" tablet has been an Asus (detachable keyboard/docking station/battery) and subsequently a Galaxy Note 10.1 (for the stylus).

It's horses for courses; if you prefer an iPad, get one - if you prefer one of the Android tablets get one of them. I prefer Android though I use an iPad at work (their choice, not mine) and don't have any problems with it.

Well I have owned my Tesco Hudle for several months which at a little over £100 is just as good as the i pad mini and of course has an expandable memory through the addition of a micro sd card.
Basically I see no point in buying a RangeRover to go shopping in and if I need a 4x4 I will buy a Toyota crewcab or similar.
My daughter has top of the range latest version i pads and i phones yet still cannot take a picture or record a movie right way up and uses the i phone to make phone calls and little else.
If you are a graphics designer choose the Apple Mac technology but if you are Joe Public buy something that is good and good value for money! and android technology beats Apple Mac technology hands down pound for pound.

Just bought the wife a Hudl for Christmas. Does anyone know if it will run Navionics or similar so I can play too?
No reason why not as it is an android.....Hudl has GPS as well. I reckon she will love her pressie but when is she ever going to be able to use it? :)

Statistics from vendors, personal experience and working in the industry mainly. If all else fails, there's the public transport test - stand on a train/tube and look around you. Most people I see out and about who are actually using their devices have Apple ones. There may be thousands of Android tablets in peoples bags but that just proves my point further. In the business world it's almost exclusively Apple and Windows devices that we deploy and work with. App store sales and free downloads are heavily biased towards Apple, indicating that people are using more software on those devices rather than just a bit of browsing. Web statistics consistently show Apple devices used more, even after the Android faking the string is taken into account - resolution is a good indicator of which are iPads and which are pretending to be. The sales stats are effectively meaningless for these comparisons because there are a large number of sub £100 tablets getting dusty in drawers!

I'm not saying Apple are better, I'm saying they tend to be used more often and to do more things and would therefore offer better value than buying a tablet for occasional web browsing and media consumption.

You're right that Nexus may not be the best tablet, but Samsung have a nasty habit of supporting their devices and software only until their next device is available a few months down the line while the Nexus range has longer term support.

Thanks. The post on 15/12 reckons it is 'fully functional' so probably worth risking the price.
Even if it has glitches I think they should give you a free upgrade when they finally get the Android version fully sorted. There has been so much bad publicity on here and other places recently about poor customer care that one would think they would monitor social media and give a better service in the future.

That is explained by the sheep effect. Many people prefer form over function and think they look cool when flaunting their Idevice.

Yeah they all look like they are doing it to show off, the way they don't ever look up or put the device down. Could it in fact be you with the problem and they are just using their devices and going about their lives happy with the choice they've made?

I don't own one but would seriously consider the Sony Xperia Z 10.1 inch Tablet see here : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xperia-Qualcomm-Snapdragon-Processor-Integrated/dp/B00CGFWH0S#productDetails

Unfortunately it does not meet the OP's price constraints but has the advantage of being waterproof (submersible for up to 30 minutes) which has to be a big advantage on a boat.

Boo2
I have considered the Sony Xperia Z but have been unable to find anyone able to run Navionics on it.

If anyone has I would be delighted to know as I would quite like one.

Sshh ! Apparently you are not allowed to mention Apple devices on this thread, don't you know. This one stopped being about Boatowners sharing valued knowledge of what is likely the best device available for the intended task.

You see the OP said he didn't want to buy an Apple device, so that's it, us who may have experienced its wider advantages must not mention it. I mentioned it once but the thread Policia on here noticed and I didn't get away with it !
