I take that to mean they don't want to go down the Apple route as the cost is unjustifiable. What is it with Apple fans? Are you all on commission?

No it's just that they are the best ones really. I don't. Suffer from the syndrome. I get mine free from work

I'm sure there are loads of threads on this but I have failed to find what I want.
The time has arrived to buy a tablet for home use. So I am told! Obviously I want some frills for navigation work. We don't want to go down the Apple route as the cost is unjustifiable. So Android it is.
What are people using, preferably in the lower price range but in the 10" screensize?
It MUST have its' own dedicated GPS. I have seen a number that claim to have GPS but are using WiFi as the locating system.

What is advised?

Bought a google nexus 10 some time ago. Excellent piece of kit. Woks well for nav on board with built in gps. It doesnt have a sim card but thats no issue - I just tether to the phone on the rare occasion I need to.

I make use occasionally of my sons 9 inch I Pad and I reckon the Nexus is ( marginally) better

In general with Android (not specifically Nexus) is tethering - either via USB or Bluetooth - an issue? What about drivers? (I have no Android experience).

I turn my phones wifi hotspot on and connect that way. I can use a cable or the bluetooth, my cheapo Maplins job has both. I don't use it on the boat. I go to the boat to get away from the everyday grind. I even turn my phone off unless I want to make a call. As for navigation I have a plotter running off the boats electrics. I can't see the point of using a tablet for that myself......

OK, Thanks. I appreciate that connection via wifi will not be a problem; it is whether there are driver issues when connecting (to, say, a 3 mobile phone) via cable/bluetooth to an android device? Usually the phone loads the necessary (windows) driver the first time it is connected to a PC? (My phones do not have wifi hotspot capability).

No problem at all, no drivers needed. Cant answer about connecting phones by cable since I dont have a cable with mini usb at both ends. But you can connect by bluetooth and there is also "android beam" connecting via NFC whatever that is.

Forums are so funny when they get off topic!

A reason is that once a thread 'takes off' - like this one - you know that lots of potentially knowledgeable people are following and may be able to help with related questions.

To get it back to your original question:............. I'm also looking for a 10" Android tablet at the cheap end of the market. Has anyone actually bought one of the numerous sub-£100 (new) tablets on Ebay? (although I doubt you will find built in GPS at this price).

I have a Prestigio tablet bought from Maplin. Its ok and does most things you would ask of it. It is currently £99.99 and sadly, no it doesn't have a GPS built in. If using a cable to connect it to my phone I set the Mobile Network to "pass through" mode. It basically turns the phone into a modem. The tablet can also get gps data through the cable too.
My phone is an HTC somethingorother which is android. The tablet runs Android Jelly bean 4.2, or somwthing like that. Its a plug and play affair with my phone. I did try some map software on it, Memory Map I think. It worked ok, but I have a **** Nav built into the car and the Plotter on the boat. Why would I want an exec toy with trailing wires in an enviromet it wasn't designed for?
Everyone to their own. For the money I really can't falt it. I did stuff a 32GB card in its slot. It has 8gig built in, but I store a fair few piccies on it. It has a dual core cpu, HD playback etc etc etc.

I have the Samsung Tab2 10.1" , wifi only not 3g. Works very well with Navionics app(£38), it has built in gps, worked fine for west coast of Scotland and trip from east coast t Holland. Highly recommended. You can get the 7" version fo £ 100 or the tab3 for alittle more.

Sounds a good piece of kit, and good user reviews on various "buy it" websites.

One question - can it be charged from an in-car/boat cigarette lighter type socket? Or is it just mains charging?

Yes, bad experience. Had "the right specs" ie GPS but missed basics such as two-finger zoom and access to Google Market at the time, things one would assume to be there until you get the thing and to your disbelief it does not have it.

For £99 you can today buy a Samsung Tab 2 7" from TescoDirect, without vouchers or anything. Or Tab3 for £109from John Lewis on that earlier link.
