Which Sika?

291 (or 3M 4200) for general purposes including thru hulls imho. 292 and 5200 for cases where you want ultra strong bond that you won't want to break like hull to deck mouldings. The (i) rating for sika is neither here nor there.

Thanks all. I assume once opened it goes off in the nozzle so won't keep (unless you have spare nozzles)?

I reused a tube for sealing the cat flap.
Just use a coat-hanger wire to purge the plug of solidified sealant from the nozzle, and you're good to go again.
(Sika 291i is probably overkill for a cat flap, but it was in the right place at the right time :))

Remove and clean the nozzle, put a piece of a thin plastic (plastic bag, cling film) over the end of the tube, replace nozzle.

Open door kitchen with hands covered in Sika 291i.
Sika 291i is now on the kitchen door handle.

Attempt to call Mrs FP who is busy in the greenhouse.
Open kitchen cupboard containing cling film.
Sika 291i is now on the the kitchen cupboard door pull.

Peel off section of cling film and attach to nozzle.
Sika 291i is now on the box of cling film, the kitchen worktop, and the kitchen cupboard base unit.

Go back into garage, put covered Sika away.
Open garage cupboard containing cleaning solvent.
Sika 291i is now on the garage cupboard door and the solvent container.

I start the clean up operation to re-trace my steps, and the cat appears to investigate.
Mrs FP arrives at the stage where I have just Sika'd the kitchen taps as well, and very helpfully asks why is it that the cat now smells of Acetone?

:D
Brilliant - you just summed up what happens whenever I do similar jobs with sealants.

Brilliant David :D

Drew a good chuckle!

A small warning on Sika.
A couple of years ago, I showed in this thread how badly the recaulking of my deck, made by a professional yard with the 290i DC, deteriorated after just a couple of season.
The pic I posted back then is not visible anymore in that thread due to the Photobucket crooks, but here it is:

Anyway, just for the records, it was afterwards confirmed and recognized by Sika that the problem was somehow connected with the formulation change introduced with the "i" version of their stuff - to the point that they refunded my yard (not just the material) for another full recaulking job.

Now, I don't know if this trouble with "i" formulations, whatever it was, affected also other products.
And it might well have been fixed in the meantime, I suppose.
But as the old saying goes, once bitten, twice shy...

I have used Sika 291 for all mastic sealing jobs since Boatlife Polysulphide stopped being made. Not threads, O rings or gaskets though - I use Loctite 577 for that task.

If you have an open cartridge seal the end with some polythene or cling film then put it in the freezer until next required - this stops it going off, even the bit in the nozzle, and it will last for ever, just have to keep SWMBO sweet. When you need to next use it it just needs a couple of hours to thaw out.

Useful tip Trevor, thanks.
