I feel it's probably time to get out and join a club. The question is which one and why? Do we (my wife should come I suppose) join my local one, Yately Offshore Sailing Club, which appears to have a thriving social and sailing scene, and is only a few miles away. Or do we join a club near the mooring in Itchenor. This would also have a lot going for it, as long as we can get there in the dingy! Which do you all recommend.

Thanks

Dave

I am a member at Bosham and its a lively fun club, slight waiting list but well worth it. Itchenor is pretty die hard racing and little social life, especially in the winter when the place shuts up, we are all year round. Would be happy to give you and intro.

Cheers

Joining a club (in my case Emsworth Slipper) has been one of the best decisions I have made (and I am not a gung-ho racer or normally a very 'clubby' person).

To check them out, you could write (as we did) to all the local clubs and ask for some info. You can learn an awful lot from their reply. And/or from websites.

One club (which I will not name) sent back a new member's application pack. It had a membership list: both a London address (SW postcode) and a local address seemed normal, as did a hyphen in the middle of the name. When I came to the rule that all members had to wear a tie in the club house after 7.00 pm I realised we were not going to get on.

There are so many sorts of club...

Best of luck

Hi

I live near Yateley and went along to the YOSC meet this month. The people all seemed very nice, the monthly talk was really interesting and I am going to join myself.

The club gives opportunities to find crew if you are short.. lots of members dont have boats and also to find people you might like to meet up whilst out sailing.

The suggstion of joing two clubs seems good.. shoreside clubs have the extra benefit of moorings, hard standing, racing etc and a place for food/beer after sailing... Yately gives an opportunity of a beer on a monday night to talk sailing without driving to the coast!

Go along to Yateley one monday and people will chat to you and see what you think. (1st Monday of the month is a talk starting at 8pm. other mondays are a get together at about 9pm. See www.yosc.org.uk

Last month I was going round the Sydney Maritime Museum. I got talking to a guy who was demonstrating ship modelling. He had left Britain about 40 years ago so we got talking about where we came from. I mentioned Chichester and he said he used to race at Emsworth Slipper - 'so did I' I replied.

Now how's that for coincidence.

Incidentally, does the class divide between Emsworth and Emsworth Slipper still persist?!

We're members of Dell Quay SC - very friendly, volunteer based, best and most beautiful place in the harbour (IMHO, of course).

PM me if you'd like to visit - we'd love to show you around.

BTW, we play a mean game of darts - ask Emsworth YC!

Am I breaking any rules "bigging up" my beloved club?

There are lots of lovely clubs round Chi, but Dell Quay is home for us...
