Am planning to fit a rope cutter this winter-picked up brochure for stripper and spurs at LIBS but also seen advert for gator which appears to be very similar- called into Gator premises-very helpful chap and on basis of his claims would choose his product (handy being local to me too ) but before I make final decision would welcome other users feedback - have read sailing today report which favoured teethed cutter but gator not tested.

What do you recommend?

Anyone got a gator?

No question, all the independent reports say the same, Ambassador 'Stripper'.

Inevitabley also the most expensive !

Trouble is, if you have a rope-cutter maybe you never know how good it is! We have a 'Spurs', we assume it works! One downside of it (probably caused by being in a mud berth) is that we get through a set of bearings every 2 years,

Previous owner fitted the teethed job with standing part and rotating cutter. He forgot to change the nylon bush and it had developed a serious ridge in it that prevented service and refit. An expensive mistake ....... BUT before it HAD to come off - it did a marvelous job !! If I wasn't spending the money on other bits and bobs - I would certainly fit another....(they don't sell the bits separately I need !!)

I fitted an Ambassador Stripper last July (second hand from a friend of mine) - found some blue bits of rope in the teeth on haul out so something happened but I wasn't aware of any 'chomping' going on - I wouldn't be without one now though!

I had to order the 'stopper' part that bolts to the cutlass bearing housing and the manufacturers were very helpful and just sold me the bit I needed.

Top marks

Best rope cutter I've ever come across is SWMBO. Cost me a decent snorkel outfit about 6 years ago and never looked back since, don't even bother looking for pot lines anymore when she's on board and don't mind making the tea that day either.

All the mags reckon the Ambassador is the best, closely followed by the Sprurs. Don't know about the Gator.

I had a circular bladed one - waste of money and soon got blunt. It's somewhere in my garage now. I then fitted a stripper which I should have done in the first place. I had to get a special plate for the P bracket which Ambassadors were very helpful about. The stripper is still very sharp after several years - I cut my finger taking it off last winter.

The Ambassador was the one that stood out a mile in tests in one of the boaty mags. Bought one for my bateau as we sail in the North Sea with loads of fish pots etc. Cost about £400 but as I said to the Missus (in cunning justification) if you had a rope around the prop out there and were firmly anchored to the seabed by it you would pay anything to get away!! Had to be done- good investment and peace of mind.

Re: I presume she doesn\'t read this board NM

She does, has a great soh and REALLY loves swimming. Also enjoyed clipping me round the ear.
