Which phone to buy this year?Anyone used nokia??do they all fall apart

Hi Robin

I am much the same, just want a fone (but must have a radio, and new Nokia ones here now don't /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif).

Once I forgot to lock my fone and next thing I got a fone call on land line from my elderly mother saying she had had a very strange fone call with voices away in the distance that sounded just like me and wifie.

Of course I told her she must have been imagining things /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Not sure if I was driven by not wanting to own up to it or whether I thought ghostly fone stories would give her a good conversation topic.

All Nokias allow you to answer a call without unlocking.

Went to Nokia from Ericsson years ago, and glad I did. Ericsson fones are now all Sony's anyway. They gave up handsets years ago.

My dearly beloved had a Nokia AND swapped it for another this time too despite complaining about it all year, that's female logic for you! Twice I received the strange calls on the office phone, the second time I could hear her talking to a friend from the golf club - for 15 minutes. Now she has done something on the new one that affects the call volume, I think it adjusts to match background noise, so when she calls from the supermarket carpark I can hear banging doors, car noises etc but not her voice nor can she apparently hear me. Needless to say I am not allowed to interfere and reset it. Last year she switched it to a single beep for an incoming call, not often heard when the phone is buried deep in the handbag, then wondered why she got voicemails when the phone was there and switched on.

hi gianenrico i edited my last post when i saw you posted.I better PM you about Sardinia or its a bit off topic!

From what i can see i should stay with the erricson 630 pricewise its great £60 has a good screen BT GPRS just no memory!

What about useing the phone? My "TIM" card has expired as i dident top it up but my Italian phone number was 033 4400 007 !!!!!

Not a bad number i supose ive lost it now???

Dose Italy have tele2?? or is TIM still the best?

Just looked at the phones again and Nokia are far cheeper than Sony??
Cant understand why?? Perhaps the success od the 630 makes them think they can charge anything they want the K750i costs twice that of the nokia 6230 and seem to have the same specs????

Now on my 6th Nokia, no not because of faults two were upgrades and I lost 3 in the sea, hazard of my job being on and off boats all day long, but I managed to retrieve the phone each time and the sim car is still working after 3 dunkings while powered up. Now run a 6020 as the office phone as well as 6100 for personal use and the older version which came as the built in handsfree with my SAAB. Wouldn't entertain anything else, after 12 years, 6 phones and no faults!

Heh heh, I'm not getting drawn in to this one, I'm too biased... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But anyway, trying to be helpful...
Find the model you want from here
Find the accessories you want (including a remote QWERTY keyboard) from here

Then look around for a good deal. You might find that the one that fits to you can be obtained "on offer" somewhere or as a refurbished (new covers and hopefully cleaned memory) part-exchange model from a dealer...

I'm sticking to my ruggedised (horrid word) Siemens M65. My Nokia's have always broken and SWMBO gave my Motorola an unplanned bath in the Kennet and Avon canal, from which it never recovered. Touching wood the M65 has now lasted longer than the others did individually. The Action Man style orange and grey colour scheme is a bit loud though:-)

Trouvill,

Just got upgraded from my old Nokia 6630 to a nokia 9300......have a look at it brilliant piece of kit with all the bells & whistles to communicate with. No camera but why have a phone with a camera???

The keyboard is very easy to use & you can connect to GPRS, wap, fax or blackberry.

As I said great piece of kit........

Hi Trouville!

Don't know much about mobile 'phones, but it's interesting that in the last eight years my Motorola Tri-Band has been submerged in salt water three times for up to 2 hours, yet after sloshing it around in fresh watwer and allowing it to dry out naturally, it still works!

As far as I'm concerned, they can stuff all the video/pictures/ringtones and God knows what else, and just make a simple 'phone like mine, but one that is DESIGNED to be so badly abused!!

So far SWMBO has b+++ered three mobiles 'cos they couldn't stand the marine course, whereas mine is not the only Motorola unit I know of that has 'returned from the (apparent) dead'!!!

Nokia 5140i

I agree with every word you say.
I got mine because she ( saleslady) mentioned the magic words "dustproof" and "shockproof".
It has a compass, sound meter, thermometer, camera, sound recorder, loads of stuff.
It's just that you can't receive calls on it. Slight drawback.
I've also got locked into calls, got locked out of the phone altogether, and only been able to cycle between louspeaker and earpiece, with no other options.
I had to buy another car kit (I was told it was standard Nokia) which needs a degree in RubicsCubeOlogy to connect to.

It's a pile of shite.

And I forgot to add that irritating little 'tune' it kept playing that appears in their TV ads. Oh and the latest surreal TV AD with anorexic and absolutely sexless bird with a paintbrush doesn't help their cause either!

I've had mobiles for nearly 20 years, 'transportable' (ie shoebox size) to start with that I could use in the car or on the boat. After 20 years and probably 12-15 different phones I can confirm that Nokia was the worst I ever had. It's only redeeming feature was long battery life - probably because I avoided using it as much as possible!

Data connections

It's a different connection.

The WAP (handset browser) GPRS connection is into the network portal.

There are different settings if you want the real internet, for instance to access 'net based e-mail, or to browse on a laptop or PDA. In this case you need a connection to the network IP node.
