Tilley Lamps

A recent PBO article mentioned these so I bought a used Tilley on EBay. Good light, works well and doubles as a heater in winter. So inspired I bought a brand new one which had to be replaced ( would not ignite ) - the replacement also did not work ( poor light ). Nothing but trouble. I now use a Vapalux Bialaddin M320 with the old Tilley as a spare. Tilleys it seems " ain't what they used to be".

Another request for recommendations - oh, isn't refitting a boat to one's own requirements fun?

This time, it's the cabin lighting. I want to put in paraffin lights as I am a great believer in not using electricity. As far as I can see, there are only two commonly available lamps, both from Nauticalia and both forty quid or so each - the Gipsy Moth (left) and the Fastnet (right)

I have an older version of the Gipsy Moth and Love them. However visitors tend to brush against them and bang goes the chimney. For this reason alone I would think the Fastnet more suitable. Like the chimney protector.

My experience was very similar. Sent back the new Tilley for a full refund after repeated problems from the moment I received it - and now have 2 very old and very brilliant Vapalux M320s.

I have the Fastnet. It's good, but it's quite a big overall unit. Bigger than I expected from the picture. But after a lot of use (lived aboard using it often for three years) there was not a single mark on the roof above it - so the gimballing 'roof' really works.
