Which new outboard for my Valiant 18\' ?

I need to get a new outboard for my Valiant 18. It is 18 ft and wieghs 850kg + kit + crew.

It will go along at about 4 knots with my Mariner 2.5hp but obviously is putting enormous load on the engine (only used it as an emergency measure).

I think I would like a 2 stroke because I can share the fuel, I will also be transporting the engine on its side, in the boot each time and I've heard 4 strokes don't like this much.

Long shaft and gears are a must.

If anyone could recommend a good value model/manufactuere I'd be grateful.

Many thanks.

If your looking for value then have a look at the Tohatsu range, Oldest outbard maker apparently. Or Seagul sport range, basically selva motors with a different name on the box. I use a mariner 4 stroke as a backup, it gets put in the back of the Range Rover when being transported. True it can only be laid down on one side, but the thing sips petrol as if it was on ration. Quiet is not the word and no mixing oils and the petrol lasts in the tank and wont go off in a couple of weeks.

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

try Tohatsu as suggested. Lying a 4 stroke on its side? Not a problem at all, my honda 2HP lies on the side opposite the handle very comfortably, even 2 plastic bits on the casing to make sure it is stable.
Don't you lay your 2stroke on its side too?
Tohatsu make the basic block for Mariner & Mercury, and there are minor differences, ST or PBO did a test some months ago and they were all pretty well much the same. Shop around for prices and spares availability locally.

I'd rather be sailing...

Thanks all. I have opted for a Tohatsu 2 stroke 8hp - thanks for reminding me about Tohatsu, dealer confirmed that they basically make Mariners which are more expensive.
