Back in the day (early 90s), I had a SLAM jacket - fleece lined, wind and spray proof, almost water proof. 30 years later I miss it.

Is there a modern equivalent?

I see they have the "Summer sailing jacket", described as "Iconic waterproof and windproof sailing jacket", but they have changed the cuffs on the wrist and waist (adjustable Velcro on the wrist and smaller hem on the waist) from the original. Its also mesh lined not fleece (I used mine as a pillow on more than a few occasions - mesh not so good for that!)

There's also the "Crew hooded jacket 2.0" - again- cuffs not the same and the hood is high vis and lining is mesh.

So, any alternatives? Wind proof, spray proof, (rain / waterproof?), lined for some warmth - I'm on the West coast, with a fold away hood, zipped pockets etc.

The original was perfect (bar the cost, but it did last 20 odd years of abuse - so good value in reality) - I used it on the water, off the water, used it as a pillow, I even went skiing in it on sunny days. The wind and water never went up my sleeves, the collar was high enough to "seal" your neck in all but the most direct drenches, the waist didn't rid up etc.

I'm with you on the fleece lining, the outer keeps the wind off and the fleece adds that bit of warmth. I must have had a dozen Musto snugs over the years and like them:

I think the more they try to improve the fabric probably the less waterproof they are and they may not meet the demanding role you are looking at (fabric cuffs no hood etc) However for about £80 - £90 discount price they are ok.

One word of warning. They have reduced the depth of the internal pocket and, if you leave the zip open and bend down it ejects the contents directly out - normally into the sea. The internal pocket is ideal for wallets and mobile phones of course. Awful design you should not need to get the sewing machine out on a new item.

I HATE VELCRO CUFFS !!!!! I wonder what size wrists they think people have ... even at smallest radius and Velcro only just attaching - its still too big and then I have the velcro strap catching everything where its so proud.
I preferred my old Regatta - where it had elasticated inner cuffs inside the outer waterproof sleeve. Plus a zip in fleece that could be worn separate or zipped in. But Regatta seems more designed for guys to go river fishing rather than boating ... but I do have a number of their fleece style summer jackets for walking ashore etc.

My latest jacket is "Tribord Adventure" .... designed as Coastal - but in fact is very good ... bought the matching trousers as well. One thing I like is the jacket is longer than most - but does not interfere when siiting down etc. Good deep pockets ... good hood ....

Before buying the Tribord .. I bought a HH and a Musto online ... despite listing as suitable size for me - I found they were too small ... and gave to the wife and friend ... they were cr** anyway ... waste of money.

I recommend Maindeck Crew Jacket. I have had two of these over decades now. They have modern fleece, not the bubbly stuff, finer grained fleece on the inside, high collar and when new are waterproof, which can easily be refreshed with modern sprays.

This is the same as @Doug78 and is on offer at just under £30 which I think is incredibly good value Maindeck Crew Jacket - Size S - Navy / Red Fleece (MD-CJNRS)

Personally, I have had no issue with the velcro cuffs and enjoy the ability to snug up tight or loosen right off as the conditions or use demand e.g. winching, snug up tight.

I'm on my second Musto Snug and it's drastically lower quality than the first (since Musto were sold to the group with Helly Hansen).

It's not waterproof, it's splashproof. The zips catch when closing, the zips now have very cheap toggles rather than the nice cord and plastic ones previously. The fleece is thinner and somehow more sweaty than the old fleece despite being less warm, and the new fleece is bobbling and wearing thin after a couple of years while the old (my "anchoring jacket") is still in very good condition, although dirty.

I won't be buying another, this is yet another example of value being sucked out of a company by investment organisations.

I believe Gill were still independent when I last looked, and have really upped their game with garments.

I've had equivalents to that jacket over the years. Over time though I've moved away from fleece lined jackets and towards shells, then just add a separate fleece if I need the warmth. I also have softshell types that I principally wear ashore, or as a midlayer below a heavier jacket.

This means I have a light spray jacket for days where it's warm but breezy, but can add a layer when it's a bit colder.

Fully agree with this, they may not be quite what the OP wants but they are great value. I bought a cheap Maindeck about 5 years ago when they were on offer locally and I could not get a Musto at the right price. Very good and showing no signs of giving up despite being used for winter maintenance duties.
Musto fades pretty badly after about 18 months the Maindeck still looks almost as bright as new.

The cuffs are elasticated with a Velcro adjustment , I found a fit I liked and sewed them down. Beware they still have the shallow inside suicide pockets.

Alas, the sub £30 one is the XS only. The rest are £49.

Perhaps a bit of SEO shenanigans, they are £20 cheaper than the rest of the searches for a Maindeck crew jacket.
