Which is the best Tilley Hat?

I've got the white canvas Tilley hat and I don't care what I look like.

It keeps the sun and the rain off and is one of the few sun hats I can wear and shoot with, every other (sun) hat gets knocked off as soon as I shoot a vertical image.

Tilly style hats are compulsory wear for school kids in a lot of Australian schools. Councils also issue them to outdoor workers. This brings the price down to less than $10 or so and its just a matter of finding a school that has a decent colour.

They are probably made in China.

Not got a Tilley yet, but I might get one if I'm /really upset/ when I lose my Trespass Fake Tilley.

A man should have many hats - from my Rohan baseball cap (with fold-out kepi-style curtain) to my Ushanka.

I kinda work on the basic plan:
baseball cap = racing
Tilley = cruising
Ushanka = f-ing cold
Panama = dining ashore, south of Casablanca†, or IOW if ambient is >25 degC

Somewhere there is a great pic of me in black Ushanka, yellow ollies, holding on to the backstay in an F7, looking like I'm planting the ensign on some unconquered land ;-)

† White tuxedos should only be worn on board ship or south of Casablanca

I have a well seasoned T3 in white, with the velcroed secret pocket inside.
A Tilley is not really a Tilley until the brass eyelets acquire verdegris. It goes into the washing machine regularly where it is safe and far away from the elephants.

This is always a worry to me when sailing.

I agree, but we included this in the boat's risk assessment and the control measure is not to allow elephants on board. So far this has been effective

I love my Twatty hat. I've lost and replaced a few of them --dear but worth every penny. There's nothing really quite like them for staying in place in a blow and yet keeping the sun off your face and neck. And I couldn't care less what I look like in it. I would look even much worse with skin cancer, I reckon.

THE LARGEST BRIMMED TILLEY
I bought one similar( but not exactly the same) as this in white, directly from canada three years ago.
I try not to be seen in it by friends tho'.
Its massive brim keeps all areas from the sun.

We have a selection of hats liberated from the oggin and beach - its a kind of sport, extra points if they have an embroidered boat name so we can claim a ransome. Only caps and a Panama though, no Tilley's - maybe that says something?

My recent replacement (on their 50% "insurance" scheme) is ok, but I preferred the wording in my original one (satisfactorily verdigrised and faintly diesel-smelling, but now sadly too small).

First of all wash in lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water shrinks natural fibres.
...then the trick is to stretch them into shape immediately you wash them, and then dry, that's why.

We have a selection of hats liberated from the oggin and beach - its a kind of sport, extra points if they have an embroidered boat name so we can claim a ransome. Only caps and a Panama though, no Tilley's - maybe that says something?

That is because Tilleys are worth going back for, others can just sink or float off into the wide blue yonder. Mind you the wearer needs to RTFI and use the straps, although I do find they get tangled with my glasses straps, especially after the hat has been pushed back cowboy style if going in a shop maybe.

I do also have a cheapo copy now wot says 'Daytona Beach' on the front and only cost $8, but it just isn't the same as it has a limp brim, probably made in chinkyland, like most things in the land of septics.

...then the trick is to stretch them into shape immediately you wash them, and then dry, that's why.

If it's shrunk, the way to stretch it is to put the crown of your Tilley on your knee, and stretch it by pulling the the other side of the crown towards you, rotate a bit and do again - repeat as necessary c]:o)

I don't think the hat has shrunk. My head has grown

I was given the original one as a teenager. It was slightly too small then, but wearable. My head has probably grown slightly since, plus I now have much more hair. Between those factors, it's now definitely too small. I've had a number of replacement hats since, one even for long enough to get verdigrised and lightly tar-stained, but the latest is still very new-looking. I still have the original.

I once found a Turkish Coastguard hat on the seabed while diving. Wasn't going to try to extract a ransom though!
