Hello

On our new purchase there is a gas cooker which to be honest is past its sell by date. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

So the question for the panel is " If you were to replace the cooker on your boat/yacht which one would you go for and why?

Looking forward to you replies.

David

Depends on how much cooking you want to do.

We have a double burner with a grill but cook very little - basically boil a kettle and the odd tinned meal out the locker if we decide to anchor up or arrive somewhere late.

If I was replacing it, I would settle for one of those single ring cookers that takes a gas cartridge and use the space for something else.

The obvious answer is erm, the one we bought!

But it my case it is. We had to replace ours to comply with a survey so went looking. At Southampton BS we pulled prodded, kicked, flicked and then we went to look at the cookers on offer /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

In the sub £500 bracket you have the Neptune, techplex <sic> or the Nelson Spinflo. Although the Spinflo was and is the more expensive unit it is the only one to buy IMHO.

We have found it well built, no sharp edges (see the other two). The oven is thermostatically controlled and it looks good too.

It passes the toast test and does not rattle under power.

Would definitely recommend, but expect to pay a small premium.

As already stated it depends on your cooking habits. You can save a lot of trouble and money if you can make do with a spirit cooker. No worries about gas leaks certification or bottle storage. But hey I never use my cooker.

As the others have said depends on what you are going to be cooking and how much/often. I'm a liveaboard, so I would go for the best I could afford, it will reward you.
If I get another boat and it needs a new cooker I would go for a force 10, three or four ring. But I cook a lot!

Out of interest ....

What tells you the cooker is past its sell by date ?Is it just cosmetics or actual fault ? Is it some Surveyor comment ?

I have an old Calor job that could have come from the Ark !! It is not the most beautiful piece of work, but it works fine, cooks whatever I want, doesn't leak .... only thing is the oven door needs a clip to keep it shut when heeled to port ...
I have looked at various new job's to replace it with and to be honest I prefer my old one !!! The new ones appear so flimsy compared to my 'battle-tank' job.

Just a thought .... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Nelson Spinflo definitely!! We have had this cooker since the beginning of this season after pensioning off our old Vanessa which had lasted 20 years.

Frankly we didn't know what to expect, even though we'd heard good reports, and the cooker had come out top in a couple of yottymag tests.

Well, it's brilliant, and far surpasses our expectations, especially when we tried baking bread - very much a trial and error thing with the Vanessa - as the results were superb.

It's not cheap, and we did breathe deeply before placing the order, but are very pleased that we did.

If money was no object, a Taylors. We have one on our boat (but I managed to mick it up second hand and sent it to Taylors to be refurbished). They are outrageously expensive new, but they do cook very very well. We have had roast beef on board cooked in ours, and very nice it was too...

Only one vote above for a spirit cooker. So here's another one.

I bought a boat a few years ago with a dodgy looking gas cooker. The gas installation was also dodgy with no gas bottle locker so I'd have needed to do some mods to satisfy the insurance company.

Easy decision was an Origo two burner spirit cooker. Cheap, easy & quick to install, easy to use, low maintenance & boils the kettle, cooks from cans etc. Also very little pong - I tried the clear French stuff & the pong was worse than our traditional meths.

However, if I was doing anything more than kettle & pots type cooking I'd want an oven.

Very happy with Spinflo,"Nelson" Try Leisure Spares Morley Leeds, Tel 01132530728 they did me a really good deal, not sure if they on the web.

We have a techimpex as well, but if buying one of these do a very careful quality check on it yourself. We returned 3 before we found one that was satisfactory , and have been very happy with it since.

I like the french and italian ones on the calor gas site, gone right off the force ten, wont fit!! The big four burner frenchie looks wonderful! the "Chef" is it?

"Depends on your usage"

When I did my Coastal Skipper on the CSSSA boat
Skip gathered us together and said "Right lads, just because we are on a boat does not mean we go without Sunday lunch.
We are having a joint of beef and three veg"
We did too, put the joint in the oven for an hour or so and prepared the veg en route. Jolly good it was.

Re: Out of interest ....

Hi

Many thanks to everyone who has made a reply and please keep your comments coming in.

To Nigel:- The present cooker, although it's a Taylor, is in a very poor condition. All the pipes taking the gas from the pilot light to the individual rings (it's a 4 burner) are coroded and damaged. The controls for each of the rings are damaged and are difficult to turn. The oven door has been damaged as has the exterior corner where the hinges are situated. The exterior below the oven door is also damaged. There is evidence of rust on other areas of the outside.

OK the cooker could be sent back to Taylors but to be honest I think it would cost quite a bit to bring it back upto standard. I've checked on their website and believe this cooker is no longer made.

I agree that modern day cookers look and feel less substantial than those made in the past, but I was advised by a surveyor that a new cooker may the best option.

Regards

David

Just make sure you are buying stainless steel and not stainless steel PLATED onto mild steel (Yes ,how cheapskate is that),so carry a magnet when you go shopping ,you might be surprised.

Stainless steel plated onto mild steel??? Never heard that one! Not sure how it would work or how you would do it. But you will find some of the lower grades of stainless are magnetic.
