I need to change the anchor on my 27 ft Cobra Bilge Keeler. (Similar to Colvic 26 Sailor)- My dodgy back can't cope with the 35 lb Danforth which came with the boat when I purchased her over 20 years ago. In all those years it has never dragged (unlike some of the vessels anchored nearby) but it has got to go as it won,t stow when raised by my new electic windlass and lifting it onto the foredeck defeats the object of fitting the winch. 35 lb was over the top anyway for a vessel of this size & displacement.
I was thinking of a 25 lb (11 kg )plough but don't want to spend £300 + on genuine CQR. - Are they that much better than the non-forged copies e.g. 12 kg plastimo plough for £50? or should I be looking at a different style altogether that will hold at well as my old heavy Danforth?
Sorry if this subject has been discussed before.
Must work on various sea beds.

Stand by for a positive avalanche of advice and maybe some hot disputes. I hope it's newbie innocence. It has been known for posters to put up this subject if they feel things have been a bit quiet. For my pennorth, we have a Delta as bower and a lightweight but very effective Fortress as a kedge.

Hold on everyone.. I just wanna top up my glass before we get started......

Ok.. thanks... Proceed. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ah, its a Aussie Cab Sauv... quite nice actully... part of the 3 bottles for a tenner deal at asda..... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

BTW.. I vote DELTA!

I vote Delta, but since you were happy with the danforth type, why not a Fortress or the cheaper Guardian version. Both Danforth types but should be better and lighter, especially in east coast mud.........that should get the ball rolling. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Over the years i have tried Bruce, CQR and others, but I now have a Plough which is only 15 kilos but is the best by far. So I vote for PLOUGH

We all have our favorite anchors; its going to be a long night......

Oh come on, everyone knows by now, you don't actually need an anchor, as the chain does all the work! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Also settling down for a long night

But do remember... its not so much the anchor thats important, as the chain........

(That should get things going...)

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif.... great minds ....

Same combination as us.

Steve, for what it's worth a genuine 10kg Delta is £99 from Port Solent Marine Superstore and the FX just a little bit more.

Brendan you are in fact aground and your anchor is doing no work cos its not touching the bottom. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Delta all the time.........I took part in early trials when the RNLI were looking for a good secondary anchor to fit on all fast afloat boats.......the Delta won hands down.........and on my own yacht have spent many peaceful nights at anchor ........that said any anchor is only as good as the bottom you drop it on.........I always anchor in water shallow enough to see the type of bottom, looking especially for weed free spots!!
