Picked a tobacco tin up off the bench to hold small bits of what I was working on.

Inside the tin was this tiny fibre washer. Its obviously been left off something else ...... but what?

Mystery solved, I think

Years ago I was cleaning the Bing carb on an old outboard.

I thought I had lost a washer so a found one to replace it.

Then discovered that the old one had stayed down the hole, whereas previously it had always come out with the jet.

I must have left the potential replacement in the baccy tin

Proof, if proof were needed, that to really confuse someone who has an engine in bits you don't take a bit away, you put an extra bit into the pile.

A bit like lobbing a shackle pin onto the deck of a boat you are racing against. They spend so much time and energy looking for where it has come from that they lose sight of the race and fall behind.
