We need to be lifted and held or put in a cradle for a half day at the end June. Ideally Kent because have a workman coming to do something who will travel from Faversham. I'm liaising with Ramsgate but it's dependent on them having a cradle available. Any other recommendations please?

12m
17t
long keel

thanks

Medway Yacht Club are well equipped to do it, but I'm not sure if they will serve non-members irrespective of how much you pay.

True, but the lock isn't - scares the hell out of me every time I have been through!

I've use the lock at Gillingham Marina a couple of times and found the lock keepers very helpful, particularly when my gear box got stuck in reverse and they assisted me to push it out of the lock so that I could tie up and fix it quietly.

I wasn't criticising the lock keepers - all good guys in my (limited) experience. It's that concrete overhang at the top just waiting to rip your stanchions off that scares me!

What's the bottom like there and are there maintenance posts?

The area by the clock tower is sand, and has a ladder to the top of the quay which is handy. I have dried out there several times - once had problems with local youths chucking stones down at the boat, although this was fairly swiftly stopped by marina staff.

There is a drying corner in Ramsgate. A very good one to boot in the SW corner next to the boat park.
The bottom is reasonable. You can check it before you dry out
There are steps from the harbour wall down to the bottom.
And it is nicely sheltered..

Agree with Pye End but would add that it has a bit of a hump, sorry had, not been there for three years so you would need to look at it on previous tide. Perhaps it depends on what do you need do? Two places that are nearer to you but not in Kent: there was a platform in Titchmarch, looked solid and clean and had power but we draw 1.6m and needed springs to get into basin. There were piles in Brightlingsea and the bottom looked OK in to work if wearing wellies. Back to Kent the piles at MYC are now little used and you might approach the club for permission to use the piles but the pad can be more than wellie deep mud, bribe the bosom to clean it on previous tide. The yard just outside the Shipwrights in Faversham has a pad but got back from Pub too late to assess depth of mud. Faversham on Iron Warf is a challenge to reach and the mud at well over wellie deep. Have dried out in tidal basin in Dover but was a berth holder at the time. If you want a great meal afterwards and your man is prepared to travel the Port du Grand Large in Dunkirk is fabulous but remember the top of quay sticks out so be prepared to release the shrouds.

If you really want to be lifted out then Conyer boat yard is probably cheapest in Kent but (at 1.6m) we needed a spring tide to get in.

At the risk of really pissing you all off, just booked my lift here in Whangarei, NZ, NZ$240. say £120, return and $20, Or £10 a day on the hard in a proper cradle with power, kitchen/lounge with Big Flatscreen, showers and WiFi. Oh and thought it is winter we do not get frosts.

Regards,

It's a decent 'grid' at Queenborough, it's towards the inshore end of the Town Quay (in Q'boro Creek) and is a flat slab of concrete. As already said, check with Phil and better quiz him about depth in the creek (and its approach). Its a cheap option for you if it's do-able.

David,

Sorry to all else especially OP as this is totally off topic but it really is a small world! I have bought a camper van here in NZ. It has a Mikuni heater MYE16 from memory. The problem is that the van is a secondary import from Japan, any information I have is in Japanese. There is a control unit which is also a timer and fiddling around with this the heater unit did fire up. The problem with the timer is that at the bottom there are two buttons, the left one of which is to set or save the setting. This seems to be broken, quite "pushed in". I suspect it was getting unreliable and previous owner had to poke it with a metal object until it eventually gave up the ghost. I have filled in a couple of on line requests to Mikuni UK (somewhere in ?Southampton if I remember right) but they have not come back to me. The link at the bottom of your reply is not "active" and I will do a search on Google for you. However if you think you may be able to help then a PM with your contact details would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

John

PS Not much luck with a google but will try various alternatives, it seems there are a lot of heater companies on the East Coast but most are in USofA!.
