Where should I stick my Muffler?

Following on from my post on flushing my Alpha drive, I found a muffler (mufflers?)
in the Swindery at the weekend but still need to know

1) Do I need a single or a double one.

2) Where exactly does it go?. Where are the holes it needs to cover.

3) Another thing, can't find a raw water filter anywhere, does the alpha 1 leg have one and if so where is it.

Thanks

I use double on the basis there are two sets on inlets. If you look about horizontal to the prop but back towards the transom there are sets of water inlet holes either side. The muffler covers those, and in goes the water. However DO check when you start the engine that the water is flowing back out ie it is going through the engine, and keep a close watch on the temp. The idea is too flush it not cook it!

I'm glad to hear someone else ask about the raw water filter on an Alpha 1 'cos I can't find one anywhere on my boat and thought I was missing something blindingly obvious. I do know, however, that the impeller is situated in the leg of an A1 rather than inboard. Would love to know the answer, preferably before the engine inhales a length of bladder wrack.

Incidentally, I notice that, due to lack of space on the YBW home page, this topic shows up as "Where should I stick my Muff" under the "what's new on the Forum" section. Where's Pauline when you need her?

:o)

Martyn,

It fits over a series of small holes on each side of the leg, just under the cavitation plates, but close to the 'back edge' furthest away from you. With you boat in the water, and the leg fully up, you'll still have to get your arms wet to feel them!

Perhaps you'll have more success finding the G-spot!

Nope there's no raw water filter on a normal Alpha set up, 'cos the pumps also in the leg, and there's little point fitting a filter downstream of the pump. I did think about doing a mod on mine to divert the inlet hose between the leg and the engine through a strainer, but apart from being able to view water bubbling through it and confirming the pump is ok, I didn't see it would make much difference to protecting the system, working on the assumption that the pump will cop for any garbage and fail, long before clogging the exchangers and waterways in the engine become an issue.

Finding the G Spot !!

In a tender moment the other night I said to my wife " I love you terribly.."
She just sighed and said "Yes but I suppose you do your best""

Its a relief then Martyn to know that if the engine packs up when I'm in open water is more likely to be due to overheating than cr@p in the cooling system. That's alright then

Fitting your new toy whilst in the water could start a new craze.

Bad porn novel

"Running his fingers through the mossy growth on her leg, he finally found her inlet. "Darling!" he murmured "At last I have found the promised spot but....what's this! You have no raw water filter and I can almost feel your impeller"! In his deep disappointment, he could almost hear the mocking voice of his tormentor: "Should have got a v*!v*! Then you could unscrew the top and clear the blockage!"

Riddled with despair, he clambered over her stern and tossed himself off...."

Re: Bad porn novel

When you've finished the book I'll be first in the queue!

What could be more of a turn on, you've managed to seamlessly integrate my two great passions into one.

Checking my anodes will never be the same again!

How many of the onlookers own an outdrive muffler?

Re: Max Drift

Yes, most people find it takes the first 5 days on holiday to wind down after a heavy working spell. I find it takes 5 weeks to wind up after a heavy holiday spell.

Mind you, having just presented my 2004 business plan to the new chairman yesterday, I think I'll have to begin to make some effort from about June next year if I intend keeping the job!

Re: Max Drift

That bad timing !!- right in the middle of the boating season

Bit busy next few weeks but do you fancy a pint sometime -I'll pop down to you at the H&A and even drink proper beer so as not to embarass you

Those who drink Australian

No worries Blue, they serve a pukka pint of Foster's in the H&A.

In fact if the weather's ok this coming Monday evening, I'm planning to take a couple of workmates for a blast under the bridge and back before it gets dark, get pissed in the H&A afterwards, and let them sleep on the boat to avoid them driving back to Donny.
