Where have all the good women gone?

Can't be sure but it seems as if the number of women posters has hit a new low. Even those who used to make regular, interesting and witty contributions (Serin, Vanilla, SugerBabe(?) .....) appear to have drifted away in the tide.

Now it might be that we're a bunch of jerks of which no woman in her right mind would suffer more than one :rolleyes:. Another possibility is that the entire XX brigade is over on the 'Me Too!' forum, but that seems unlikely.

Either way, it leaves this place kinda imbalanced, possibly even kinda weird.

This forum is great at fixing things. Can we fix this?
 
Every "Bad Woman" I meet on the internet turns out to be a big, hairy canadian trucker.

Having been around boats, one way or another, for more than 60 years, I have met, and continue to meet, hundreds of positive, easy going, interesting people and made many good friends.

When I come to this forum, I encounter some people I recognise as being part of the community I know in "real life". But, all too often, I also encounter small minds, mean spirits, sexist attitudes, "laddish" behaviour, gratuitous aggression and endless whingeing. There is something about the online world that seems to bring out the worst in people.

If that's how people like it, fair enough. But as far as I am concerned, there are sailing forums with more interesting and more positive cultures. The curse of the internet is upon them all, but some seem to balance the negative with the positive better than this one, where I am sure there will now be the usual "good riddance" and "don't let the door..." etc. retorts. Well - have fun!

But you haven't said that you are leaving YBW so any "bye" ripostes would surely be a bit premature? ;)

The thing I find most odd about the YBW forums, all of them, is how deadly serious so many posters seem to be. I'm sure that many of us could list the names of the many forumites who seem perpetually unable to lighten their mood and crack a smile. For most of us, sailing and boat maintenance is only a hobby rather than neurosurgery. :o

Perhaps this lack of levity all seems a bit oppressive to some potential posters of both sexes?

with gin to drink, books to read, and crochet to be done Karen can't be arsed most of the time so she just gets me to ask her questions. Maybe they all simply have better things to do. :encouragement:

It's a shame so many obviously smart women like you with a wealth of experience and good advice to give are put-off in this way. And it definitely seems to be many.

I would, however, say that we can all recognise (and ignore if we wish) the characters of which you speak: those who pop-up on endless threads to display their limited knowledge and where enthusiasm swiftly turns to aggression as they approach their knowledge boundaries, the single-issue nutters, etc.

Ybw wonderland aside, this is a tricky area. My wife used to sit on the 'diversity committee' (what a stupid name!) of a large international financial operation. A common complaint was from younger professional women who felt left out of office banter and humour by men fearful of offending them. Then there were the many senior women accused by other women of bullying, apparently a trend in the industry.

I've no solutions, but it's sad so many women feel this way. And it would be nice to think something could be done.

We're probably all to blame, and I very much include Time Inc here. By operating The Lounge as a digital fight club ybw has created a breeding ground for aggression. No surprise the backwash hits other forums as those banned from the lounge are forced into digital purgatory (the other forums) where they must create a new nautical persona before re-admittance.

Rich tapestry for sure !!

I guess, many are put off by the few attention seeking trolls who's noise is out of proportion to their numbers. Many of the decent male posters have also left for the same reason, it is noticeable that we really don't have any of the forum get togethers now that used to be such great fun!
