Where for an overnight stop in the Lake District?

Hi Chaps ... I know I haven't posted for quite some time :)

Anyway - we're driving to Scotland and back over the bank holiday weekend and we're looking to break the journey on the way home - somewhere in the lake district would be about 1/2way. It would be easy to use a chain type hotel, but we'd rather have somewhere nicer to stay and perhaps take in a little bit of the lakes whilst we're at it - having never been to the region thought some people on here may have a bit of advice on where's nice.

We want to be far enough from the motorway - but don't fancy adding several hours to the journey ..

Thoughts?

Cheers

thanks for that link Lakey - better than trying to google for somewhere ... cottageinthewood may be just a tad more than I'm after - although SWMBO may well say different! ;)

Hi
We live just north of A66 between Penrith and Keswick, just outside of the bank holiday mayhem although in the Lakes -handy for the motorway, either J40 41. if you want to pm me , I can perhaps suggest a couple of places to stay and/or visit .Regards.

Try the Brantwood Hotel in Stainton. Just off A66 five miles from the M6. The lake district is then on your doorstep. Then trip along Ulswater over kirkstone pass. Enjoy pub at top

For good value, try YMCA Lakeside (there's a YHA there). Good clean private rooms and a decent brekkie. Very uncrowded on the W shore of Windermere and, as the name suggests, it's right on the Lake.

My brother used to be head of the waterfront there! I wouldn't recommend it as a place to stay unless they've upgraded it a lot recently. It was fine for the hundreds if young people having a couple of weeks adventurous holiday, but I'm not so sure I'd recommend it as a place to stop overnight in the style the OP wants?

At the Scout Activity centre used to accommodate some of the youth groups that were on YMCA courses. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near them.

We stayed, as a family, in the YHA part of the setup a few years ago. Very pleasant, quiet, clean and good food. The view wasn't bad either.
