Just curious really but I am sure I must see so many forumites in marinas and never know it. I spend my time between Northney Marina and Port Hamble so who keeps a boat in either of those?
Not in a marina, but on a mooring around the corner from Northney (Mill Rythe). There are apparently a lot of forum mites in the Solent, so I always wave to other boats in case its someone I ought to know. There is at least one other regular poster at HYC as well, though to my knowledge we have not met.
I always remembered a friend of my fathers had a house at Kingston upon Thames .... (ever see the Michael Caine movie Black Windmill ? - there's an excellent example there !!) Well this friend had the back garden sweep down to the Thames and of course the River boat tied up alongside !
I loved the idea and vowed that one day I would do it ...
When I got married (UK) and we looked to move out of the flat we had - I was offered a house in Emsworth with garden onto the water. SHE absolutely refused saying that she didn't like the risk for the kids .....
Anyway we divorced some 20 yrs later and I had already made a life in Latvia .... later getting married to a Russian lass :
Taken in Solent with CEDOV (Russian Tall Ship departing Southampton).
Anyway - we both 'coveted' an old Latvian Country house that was near where I kept my day-boat. Having answered an advert in local paper about land for sale next to some we had on other side of town .... we then found out same guy owned the house we had been 'coveting' !! A deal was struck .... I would not want to upset you lot as to how much !! .... and a year later we moved in.
There are a few funny stories about the house and grounds .... It was built at start of 1900's and originally for 4 family's as flatlets. It had a short period as the Marine Department Office in Latvian First Republic - cast iron plaque inserted into foundations. There were about 8 buildings on the land of 14000 sq.m.
The buildings were later removed except for the barn 300 sq.m and the house 294 sq.m. The families were moved out
in early 1950's and KGB moved in and used the house as an interrogation centre (secret) as the main KGB building was in town centre and is now the council offices.
One of the fathers when being moved out secreted a 'gun' into the wall - which one he cannot remember ! so we are waiting for this to appear during our repairs !.
Anyway the KGB created the largest cellar I have ever seen ... nearly 30% of the underfloor area of the house. There were cells for 10 people ......
Anyway in 70's it reverted to family use and 3 families moved in.
When the independence came along - the Council started to sell of properties and 'Oscar' the guy who sold to us had a friend in the council who let him know the expected price prior to auction. He bought and then started to move the families out to flats in town ..... bar one. He let one family stay to provide security for the house and grounds. They remained till we bought and moved in.
The canal you see in the other photo was dug by Oscar illegally ............ and unfortunately the Mayor was fishing in a dinghy on other side of river during the digging ........... a letter arrived fining Oscar and then official Acceptance letter issued.
Before we bought - Oscar had aplied and was accepted that the canal was authorised to build and have a Boat Club / House ..... so guess what ?
When we started rebuilding the house ..... there was extensive work required .... the walls were of timber on stone foundations. The dry-rot / termites / woodworm etc. had destroyed approx. 60% of the walls. So rip out - rebuild ... >
When we lifted the floor and dug it out ready to concrete in pillars etc. - we found two sets of bones mixed up .... they were collected and given decent burial in the garden corner .... (we are told that the whole area is liable to have some strange items due to KGB .... !!)
Anyway we are not going to change the character too much of the house internally - it has natural beam ceilings and proper timber .... stone fireplaces etc. >
We expect to be about 2 years before we finish repairs to the house ..... then we start on the Summer / Guest house at river-side with decking out into the canal - where boat will tie up alongside etc.
So apologies for the long post ..... but I am very very happy and achieved a dream .... next is to bring my UK boat to here .... I am not trying to show off - I'm just proud that I managed to do it !!!
