Where can I get one of these?

Looking forward to seeing Mapis' scale 3d model with working understeps waterfall in the next few days.
Well, those friends of mine would be more than happy to build one for you, now that they're back to their office, since that's exactly their job. Shall I ask them to send you a quotation? :D

JFM, see very basic hack.

See your point wakeup and thanks, but to be honest I don't like the narrow island unit. Looks a bit nowt nor summat. And a bit post-boxish. Very much imho :-)

On a practical level, the left hand unit in the pic houses the dishwasher. Your hack converts this into one of those hard-to-reach corner units, and leaves me nowhere for the dishwasher. The dishwasher can't go in the island cos that's 500mm wide and a d/w needs 600mm depth. (Actually they'd make the island 600 wide but I don't want them to)

FWIW and entirely IMHO, I don't think that the steps integrate enough with the galley unit. As per your and Mapism's earlier drawings, I think the galley unit should form part of the step structure with the 3rd step effectively being an extension of the galley unit countertop and the 1st and 2nd steps being sunk into the galley unit. I also think the steps should spiral thru 90 deg into the centre of the boat much like Hurricane's early pic of his boat. It's not particularly ergonomic to face the steps forward as people will be approaching the steps from aft as well as forward. This would mean a small increase in riser height but, as you say, there's scope for that. I would also move the handrail to the other side ie the outside of the curve which would tend to make it less obtrusive. Sorry, don't have a resident architect here or a CAD prog to draw it:)

It's each to their own on this Deleted User but fwiw I am very firmly against building the steps into the end of the island. The whole idea of walking up your kitchen units, and on one of the steps actually walking on the worktop, feels dormobile campervan to me :-)

Just commenting on the B&O TV/ Speaker comments there, i agree with you that the Bang and Olufsen tvs are just someone else’s panel in a fancy cabinet (Lowe is a much nicer option) but i have always loved their speakers, yes you can get better sound from similar priced speakers but non that look as beautiful.

I recently bunged out my B&O head unit (beosound 9000 mk3) and opted for a sonos system to integrate some of the house, wireless streaming with an apple time capsule storing all the music, theres even a free iphone application to allow you to control each zone and where it allows you can access lots of free media through your B/B connection i.e. internet radio, last FM etc.

As all the B&O speakers are active this allows you to simply have non amplified receiver coupled with the speakers in area you want the sound. I currently have the living room (lab 8000s), kitchen (Lab 4000s), bathroom (Kef passive with sonos amplified receiver) and master bedroom (lab 6000s) on the zones, each can have its own streaming media simultaneously, i opted for the Sonos Controller CR200 Remote control as well.

I know there may be some audiophiles out there that will recommend an even more expensive option i have found this to be a great balance and the sound is still top notch with all the beauty of the B&O speakers and without the clutter of the head unit in each zone. just to add the sonos connects to the Apple time capsule via Wi fi and non of the head units need be on show as it’s a wi-fi system (less clutter and cables)

The apple time capsule will stream the media even when not coupled with a computer so you could take the time capsule home fill it up with media (1 terabyte) and then bring it back to the boat.
Well there’s my 2p's worth :)

I'll get my coat.....
LOL, I guess that's because you're expecting my (and possibly also Deleted User's) reaction to jfm comments. :)
But actually I can't disagree with him. We even discussed the camper feeling he mentions, while drawing our very first glass proposal.
The reason why we "accepted" it was that we'd rather suffer such feeling for a moment while using the stair, than another feeling when looking at the stair (which btw means quite often, considering also that the dinner table is just in front of it).
That "another feeling" was of a retractable loft ladder, as also Hurric mentioned.
Mmmm.... On second thought, I'll also get my coat now! :D
Though that was actually my friends' impression, not mine.

Fair enuff. Praps I missed it in a previous post but how come you are designing the flybridge steps? Don't FL already have a design or is the Sq78 not normally offered with fb steps?

No matter how you cut it you're still gonna have steps going over galley units and that is always gonna be a bit dormobilish. You wouldn't have that at home would you? I actually think that the integration of steps into a unit in post 91 does at least look part of the original design.

Regarding glass, wouldn't it be very heavy and also a bugger to keep clean (i.e. no finger prints)?

Pete

So why not loose the unit under the stairs all together as in take away the small unit in my pic Hack 2? Stairs then aren't over the work surface of course accepting the fact that there is now a lot less work space.

Any hint of dormobile must surely mean a reduction in the OB rating. I think jfm's gonna have his work cut out to hit the big three-oh now.

Troublemaker :-)

I'm just back from a day at the factory. There are lots more trick features I haven't even mentioned yet. Even the saloon carpet is gonna be worth a point. I'll get to the 30 even if I have to get Wakeup very sloshed to get him to certify :-)

Thanks for everyone's ideas and design work on this thread. It's much appreciated. I spent the day at Fairline today and we had to go firm on a design for the galley stairs, so the sketch below is what we settled on. This pic also shows the galley zone forward of the side door so you get more general context. The stairs will be as shown, banister starting on 2nd step. The tube between the stairs and for the banister will be rectangle section, because all the other black-leather-covered handles around the galley and saloon are rectangle section. The tube sections will be thick-walled and connected by laser-cut s/s plate 6mm or 8mm, routed into the underside of the solid oak steps, so flush. Stair riser is 280mm, which is fine, as discussed. There will be LED downlighting set flush into the forward underside of each step, with all the wires hidden inside the tube

Mavellous forum this innit :)

I look forward to seeing the results in the flesh at LIBS.

Yup.

Ah, problem there. My boat is scheduled to finish 22 Dec. With the custom work it'll take every day of that time. Earlier, before they dicovered I'm the customer from hell (:)) they hoped to finish it a bit sooner, whch would mean it would be at Excel mid December which is when the bigger boats at the back of the stands have to be loaded into position. They wont be able to do that now, so hull #69 will go to LIBS (mine is #70).

The Fairline folks are very disappointed. They wanted to show off their customisation skills and the fin stabilisers, and have a 78 in light oak for a change. #69 is alas a more bog standard build, and in gloss walnut. Forum folks can see mine on the water in perhaps February (Southampton way), and I invited Fairline to use it for Cannes show September 2011, which they may well take me up on as I'm berthed just around the corner from Cannes
