When was the last time a new marina was opened on the East Coast?

There were ambitious plans to build a marina at Slaughden, Aldeburgh in the late 1980's.
There were plans drawn but I imagine the costs were prohibitive.
The thinking was to use the land moving equipment which was needed for Sizewell B development.
Half of all Aldeburghians still get apoplectic about a couple of tin shells on the beach or a camper van on the sea wall; they’d have been manning barricades at the suggestion of a marina. ?

I wonder if we could also add the the most wobbly finger award for East Coast marinas.

It's a step into the unknown when making a foot landing in different marina . Are they born wobbly or just suffer from old age ?

I agree with BSDDDDD, as confirmed by this quotation from Burnham Yacht Harbour's website: "The yacht harbour in Burnham on Crouch has been a major feature of this well-known sailing town since its construction in 1989. "

Peter.

IIRC when Essex marina broke free in October 1987 it ended up where BYH is now.

I wonder if we could also add the the most wobbly finger award for East Coast marinas.

Given BYH's relative youth the finger pontoons are surprisingly short and springy.

Going round the coast I can think of :-

Eastbourne (nearly E Coast) early 1990's
Dover 24Hr mid 90's
Ramsgate outer harbour 1998
Fambridge, originally West Wick from the mid whenever last century
Burnham 1990 ?
Bradwell when god was still a baby (actually the first purpose built marina in the UK?
Maylandsea.. ditto
Heybridge Basin some time in the 70's
Brightlingsea river piles some time on the late 60's ?
Titchmarsh (when no idea)
Shotley (when no idea)
RHYC and Wolverstone (I remember them in the 70's)
Foxes (no idea)
Ipswich Haven and Neptune (mid 90's??)
Levington (started in the 60's and expanded)
Woodbridge ??
Lowestoft RNSYC ?
Lowestoft Haven ??
Grimsby ??
Hull ??

In my 1957 edition of East Coast Rivers (it was not new when I bought it) there are no marinas listed.

Don't worry. There will soon be an all tides marina at Southend. It can't be long now, they have been building it (or at least talking about it) since the 1980's :ROFLMAO:
Is Chatham relatively new?

They have been talking about a marina at Southend since the 1950's possibly earlier, various locations proposed, Gasworks jetty site, West of the pier near the casino, More recently down by the Garrison, there were even plans drawn up for a big one at Two tree across to the Old town, there is an article on that one on nick ardleys blog.
None of them came to anything.
Small gains Marina & Leigh Marina are called that but a muddy ditch with a few pontoons filled with a marine favela of houseboats & bugger all water does not a marina make!

Today with environmental concerns over riding everything i cannot see anything new getting built, Natural England, MMO, English heritage, Environment agency, by the time that lot have had their pound of flesh you will be lucky to get a mooring for a rowing boat.

This makes me feel really old. When I started sailing dinghies at Burnham in the mid 50s, I think the only marina on the East coast was Essex marina, then called Wallasea Bay Yacht Station I think . Made up from old rickety wooden pontoons. I did a little trip in an 18 ft open boat to Blackwater and Colne in 1971 , seemed like a major adventure at the time. We camped on the sea wall at Bradwell just where the marina entrance is now.

Ipswich Haven - 1999. I can remember turning up with my first “big” boat and being invited to pick my berth. I was about the 7th berth holder vessel to arrive after opening. Was a strange view seeing so many empty berths, but it was surprising how quickly the new marina filled up with boats!

So you think the suggested sea-lock by the Martello Tower wouldn't have been popular?

Just off topic: I spent 16 years on the Aldeburgh Town Council (12yrs + 4yrs). It was proposed by ( I think by County Council, could be wrong)
to install a statue of Benjamín Britten in the churchyard. This didn't go down too well. Plenty of memorials to him, other people buried there, etc. Someone timidly suggested a bird bath would be a better installation.
A few days after this I was seated on the pavement in a queue for The Proms, Albert Hall, with a load of College of Music students. Couple of tutors came along chatting, asked me where I was from. Aldeburgh...argh. The place that would sooner have a bird bath than a statue of Ben Britten.
It got picked up by International Press and went Worldwide. Town Council got written letters from Japan.
Didnt get the Statue, or the bird-bath.

I witnessed the first tide come into Tollesbury Marina in 1971, shortly followed by the grand opening by Sir Alec Rose. It was about two thirds the size of the present day footprint, as the bones of the old barge Hyacinth formed the harbour wall that was removed when it expanded.

Shotley was definitely the latter 80s, as the first Classic Boat Festival was in 1989 and it all seemed jolly new then. It ran for eight years there. moving to SYH in 1998.

I bet Tollesbury was a lot deeper then!
Have they found the keys to the dredger yet? ?
